[The video opens on a man's bearded face frowning and obviously touching the screen. He mutters to himself at first.]

Is it... working? Just.. that... Ah!

[He pokes it one last time with his right hand then leans back, now just staring at the screen for a while.]

Hello? Is this... Can this be heard? They said I could be heard and seen through this small contraption. Is there anybody ...?

[He pauses, a little wide-eyed and takes a breath, muttering again.]

Ridiculous, truly... I... Maybe....

[Another pause and he side-eyes the device.]

On the off-chance that this is working as I was told...

Hello. My name is John Morris.

I do hope that I am not merely speaking to myself and the very vacant air around me like a fool... but I am told this will reach all the people that also have this ... rather magical communication box.

I have need of some assistance. You see... my hand...

[He raises up his left hand.]

I cannot let it touch anything or else something very strange happens. Like so...

[A glance around and he picks up a spoon. The silver utensil begins to visibly change to gold as he holds it in view. He lets the spoon fall again, looking distressed.]

I do not know what to do about this!

[He leans in again, poking at the screen.]

Do I... Hello? How does one hear a reply...?

It appears to affect anything that I touch, accidentally or otherwise. My sleeve, my hat, a table or chair.

However, once I take my hand away the item returns to normal.

... Except for this spoon. It has not changed back.

[Once it's fully gold, it stays that way. But he has to keep holding on to complete it and the process can take longer for larger items or living things. He hasn't quite worked that out yet as he has tried to avoid touching most objects.]

You could try wearing a glove - having a barrier between your hand might counteract the effect. Does your file say anything?

[This face makes Morris pause, then blink, then he brightens, looking hopeful - even as he knows instinctively that something is very different about this man. For now, he ignores the words completely.]

It's fine, don't worry bout it. I don't have a brother, least not to my knowledge.

This friend of yours, it's possible he'll show up. Unfortunately, there's no real way to know if or even when that'll happen.

[Morris glances at the screen but then away again as if just seeing his face is causing some sort of pain.]

Oregon...? Oh, that's a state. Can't say that I have. See, I'm not really from... the same place - this is probably going to sound crazy but keep in mind you can turn objects to gold by touch.

I'm not sure where the closest river is to the assigned housing but if it's running water that's the trick you could try running your hand under the faucet in the kitchen?

Maybe you can get gloves made in various shapes by good clothing makers? And that way, if they turn to gold, they will be in the shape of something you do or need? Like one for holding a wheel while driving, one for holding a cup and one for an eating utensil. Not exactly the best solution, but in the meantime...

[ He was thinking, fast, now. ]

At least until we can test your power and find its limitations.

[ He flashes a grin at the man. ]

[He looks around, picks up another spoon with his right hand and presses it against his left wrist. Nothing happens. Then he moves it over a little to his left palm and the gold starts spreading through the metal. He pulls it quickly away and the golden effect once again vanishes.]

[Mid-1800's for him and many things were just being invented or would be invented in the near future. But personally he may not have encountered much that we now just take for granted.]

Ah, I shall have to take a better look around.
