[ When the video stream goes live, it's hard for viewers for the first few seconds to make out what's in the feed. It's far too dark and fuzzy, out of focus. A closer look might reveal whatever it is looks thin and plastic-y.

And then it's pulled back and Haru is grinning, barely able to contain her excitement from the way she sways back and forth. In her hands is a small, very official looking card with her photo on it. ]

It took a while, but I've done it! I've finally obtained my driver's license! [ She lowers the card and takes a deep breath. ] The road examination is such a nervewracking test. To be honest, this was my second time taking it...

And now that it's done, I was hoping to ask about two things in particular: firstly, going about purchasing my first car. I'm sure there's a number of people who know a lot about the process and I would very much appreciate any advice you have on the matter.

Secondly, although this may not be for a while, once I have a car I'd like to do a road trip of sorts. Has anyone done one down here in Heropa? I'm curious about what sights I could see with my friends along the way. Like I said, it won't be for some time and I'd have to plan it out, but it would be nice to know what everyone's favourite routes have been!

I can give you some car tips. You should bring me along, actually, and I'll be able to tell you whether or not they're ripping you off.

Thank you, Jaime! It sure does feel like I've gained more of it by having a license now. I always had to rely on a chauffeur or public transit back home.

[ She places her palms together. ]

[The excitement draws Crane like a moth to a flame. He claps his hands once, silently, and folds them into his lap.]

[ Haru appears just as confused by the question, but there's a lack of judgment in her response. ]

Mhmm! It's not an easy feat, but I understand now it's a privilege, not a right.

[Noah is a lot more comfortable video chatting with strangers than he used to be. He seems to be outside somewhere, his hair ruffled by a breeze, and he flashes a small, quick smile.]

[ How fortuitous. Jin Zixuan had just been speaking with his half brother about how he ought to learn to drive. So, have an anachronistically dressed man, addressing the camera formally. ]

How does one go about obtaining a license to operate one of these cars? Is there instruction you must complete?

I kind of took my time with it, but the first road test I did I made a pretty critical mistake which left me rather shaken. I don't blame you for being nervous, if you are.

[ Her hesitation is short, merely out of curiosity as she eyes his attire. He must be new, is her assumption, but he could merely enjoy wearing the clothes that tie him to his world and timeline.

Haru offers a polite smile anyway. ]

Well, first there's a knowledge test you must complete. You have to study for it and there are classes you can take.

[ Surprise! It's both. He's relatively new, and he prefers the style of clothing he's used to. Pants... without anything over them? He would feel as though he's leaving the house in his underwear. ]

Where does one obtain the knowledge? Find these classes?

I can imagine.

It is good that you persevered with the exam. Forgive the comments of an old man, but it's nice to see a good work ethic. Comes with teaching, you know?

[ She taps her chin. ]

There are schools you can attend! In-person or online. Pricing seems to vary from institution to instituition, however.

Or you can study on your own if you would rather not pay a fee. All you would have to do afterwards is pay a fee to take the knowledge test at a DMV.

I think I did expect it to be easier at first... my friend back home drives us around and it seems so effortless to her.

When I got behind the wheel during the first exam I was so nervous.

[ He can already tell he's going to have to do a lot of in depth research just to find the classes, let alone learn the knowledge taught in them. ]

I thank you for the information. If I may ask further, what was it that led you to pursue this course? What are the benefits to being able to drive a car?

[ Gosh, where does she begin? ]

A car is great for travel, especially if it's a distance away. The freedom it allows is nice... I've relied on public transit a lot and while I do love it, it can be tiring and long. An hour long train ride could be shortened by traveling in a car so easily.

I do! I've worked around cars my whole life. I got properly certified and everything when I got here too. My Dad already taught me most of it, but that little piece of paper is worth a lot. What are you looking for?

Um...

[ There's a pause.

... Haru didn't really think much on this, did she? ]

This is kind of embarrassing... but I don't know too much about what you "should" be looking for in a vehicle. It doesn't need to be anything so grandiose, just a car that I can get around with?

Oh, I can imagine.

I remember my first experience behind the wheel, too. It was horrifying - mostly for other people.

I suppose that's one of my criticisms of the road exam; they should do their best to keep us feeling calm, otherwise we are distracted on the road.

[ A small sigh follows. ]

But... the first exam I made a full stop in the middle of the street. There were no cars luckily, but it was so embarrassing.

...well, crap.

[Ryuko looks more than a little put out.]

Guess I've gotta get on that.

The cops already have enough reason to hate me, and as much as I like pissing them off, getting arrested for not having a license is probably the lamest way they could put me in the can.

Pardon me? Why do the police have a problem with you?

I'm not, like, nervous exactly... I actually had a license at home, but then I didn't drive for a while.

[Because he was dead. But he's been getting some practice in, re-familiarizing himself behind the wheel, so. He shrugs.]

What tripped you up?

Oh! That must have been exciting.

[ Haru stops, looking away shyly. ]

Er... I made a full stop and the examiner I had was a little more aggressive than the second one I had. I didn't mean to, but a cat was running across the road and I panicked.

Yes, I am displeased with the public transportation options, myself.

[ He's mostly either been walking everywhere or flying around on his sword to get places, but he will admit that being able to use a car on the public roads would make getting around easier. ]
