Jedi are supposed to be peacekeepers and scholars of The Force. It's a type of energy all living beings are connected to. From the most advanced sentient species to single celled plants and microbes. We study and use it and often act as negotiators in large scale conflict, peacekeepers in times of conflict, and escorts/bodyguards to government officials in times crisis.

And yeah it's pretty damn awful.
