Before this, I would have said that a hero is someone capable of protecting others. Implying nobility, self-sacrifice, and inner as well as outer strength. But that isn't strictly accurate.

No. Perhaps it's simply that they improve someone's life. Whether that's saving their cattle, pulling them from the brink of despair, or simply providing direction for someone that's lost. An inspiration of sorts.
