[ Kanaya turns on the camera, glancing at a distant point to the side, wearing a great scowl. ]
Have you ever had those days when you've had to empty out your savings to relocate friends whose lives are in active danger?
Well, happy birthday to me.
[ She finally looks at the camera directly, as Ashiah can be seen bumbling across the wall behind her. ] I think it's time to admit I need a new weapon. The Porter recently took the one I've relied upon for years, and this [ She brings her hand up, holding a large knife. ] has proven a feeble replacement. I'd prefer something with more weight and reach, something that can actually deal damage. Motorized, if possible.
So, I'm open to suggestions. If you craft any yourself, sell me on your product. I'm willing to learn something new, but no firearms. They don't agree with my style.

After a few moments, she looks over at Stephanie.]
I guess we should call her down?

Fortunately, Steph had the foresight to buy gift bags from the grocery store. They even come with a couple of sheets of color-coordinated tissue paper! Though in retrospect grabbing the first ones that reached her hand was probably a bad plan. Both are primarily pink, one with a poodle and the other in houndstooth.
Steph sets the cake up with candles and everything, then checks to make sure her own present is hidden by the tissue. ]

[ She shouts: ]
Heeeey, Kanaya, can you come look at something?
ACTION!
Now, what can I help you with? Is that a cake?

[Aerith toots a little party-sized plastic horn at her.]
I bet you're really surprised, huh~?
[You know, like none of them said anything about it at all!]

[ Steph just cheers and claps. Yes, mischief managed without a flaw. Nailed it, guys. ]

[ She leans over to give it a look, smiling. Whatever bakery they got it from even managed to spell her name right. ]
What flavor is it? [ Not that it matters, she won't be able to taste it anyway. ]

[She holds out her bag to her. Inside Kanaya will find a big floppy straw sun hat... and a matching one in

[ Because everyone likes chocolate! Steph holds up her own gift bag, but holds onto it until Kanaya has free hands again. Inside is a coloring book ("For Adults") and a 12 pack of colored pencils. ]

You know, you didn't have to go to all this trouble!
[ She laughs as she pulls the sunhat out. It's been a while since she's had one, she'll certainly need to re-measure before she cuts holes for her horns.
But when she finds the second one, she lets out a gasp. ]
Oh my god! Oh no!
[ She sets Ashiah down on the counter, immediately strapping it around her fat head. Kanaya is positively beaming, but her daughter seems nonplussed, glancing around at them with a frown. What is this thing on her head? ]

[Now, Aerith was about to say a lot more, but then the hats are out and--]

[Aerith IMMEDIATELY has her phone out to snap a few pictures of Ashiah in her cute little hat.]

[ Steph's still not used to having so much money to spare, with no bills to pay. She offers up her present when Kanaya is ready. She'll get those baby pictures from Aerith later. ]

She pulls the book out of the bag and smiles at it. ]

I am. You both put a much more pleasant spin on the weekend with this, and I appreciate it.
Now, why don't we give the cake a try? [ She shakes a small metal flask. ] As long as the two of you don't mind seeing me eat.
[ It's not gonna be fun trying to digest it, but they don't need to know that. They've gone to all the trouble, it's only polite. ]

[Aerith is polite enough not to say anything about Kanaya potentially drinking blood in front of them. Instead, she'll go get plates and forks for them so it's Steph that can do the cutting and serving.]

[ Steph goes ahead and cuts three slices of the cake, making sure that the first goes to Kanaya.

Setting it down on the table, she unscrews the cap on her flask and gives it a light drizzling of blood before taking a bite. ]

Aerith manages to hold a polite smile the whole time, by the strength of all the gods.]
