Have you ever had those days when you've had to empty out your savings to relocate friends whose lives are in active danger?

Well, happy birthday to me.

[ She finally looks at the camera directly, as Ashiah can be seen bumbling across the wall behind her. ] I think it's time to admit I need a new weapon. The Porter recently took the one I've relied upon for years, and this [ She brings her hand up, holding a large knife. ] has proven a feeble replacement. I'd prefer something with more weight and reach, something that can actually deal damage. Motorized, if possible.

So, I'm open to suggestions. If you craft any yourself, sell me on your product. I'm willing to learn something new, but no firearms. They don't agree with my style.

Suffice to say that local fiction has rather played the idea out. I don't generally bear a grudge for werewolves, but when one turns out to be murdering people I care about, I'm not about to ignore it.

And yes, where I'm from, the glowing would have been the giveaway. [ Of course, she also doesn't consider inhuman vampire a redundant phrase. ] Do you have much experience with vampires where you're from?

I see. In Ashan, they're mostly restricted to the orc tribes. Shapeshifters, I mean.

[A beat, and does she sound...yes, she sounds clearly amused.]

You could say I do, yes.

What's an orc?

[ She asks, despite probably looking more like an orc than a human. ]

A race of beastmen constructed by the magi council, mm...millenia ago. Larger than a human, stronger, more...well, brutish, I suppose.

There aren't any here, though. Not that I've seen.

No, I can't say I've ever met one. Every werewolf I've ever known of was human.

They are...interesting people. I've always liked them.

So the...conflict...between yourself and that wolf. I assume it is related to the death of that vampire reported in the news?

I hadn't realized there were that many other vampires here, actually. Though I suppose that is my fault, for keeping to myself.

Our numbers have fluctuated a bit. There are at least three other imPorts, off the top of my head. That isn't counting the natives, like Demidov's victims.

[There is a brief delay as Ana thinks this over. She has been so careful...and yet the woman had clearly seen her the other night.]

Yes. I suppose it should.

Though I would prefer not to have it known, if possible.

[ She pinches her fingers together, then runs them across her lips. ]

If it isn't mine to tell, I'll make sure not to tell it. I think transparency is our best policy, when people so often tend to use the secrecy against us, but that is for each vampire to decide on her own.

Well. I've spent most of my life as exceedingly public vampire. The change here is...refreshing. At least for now.

And seeing as the porter decided to give me a chance to not be a vampire, I might as well enjoy it until it gets out, right?

As much as you are inclined, yes. There was a time when she forced me into a human disguise, and while it was convenient every now and then, eventually I developed a distaste for it.

I guess it's easier not to think about it, now that I've lost the option. I can remain myself without making any effort to maintain it.

I suppose. In my case, this rebirth she granted me, strange though it might be, is...a return to something I lost long ago.

You aren't human though, clearly. Or an elf. I didn't know other races could become vampires, honestly.

Well, being fair, I didn't realize the condition occurred in humans either, before I arrived on Earth. But then, I had only learned that humans exist maybe a few hours before that.

I suppose we all must adjust to having our preconceptions torn down when we're trapped on another world.

We have to focus on the similarities, rather than the puzzling differences.

In my experience, the most common similarity will be the diet.

I had thought that, and yet the only vampire I have spoken with here, besides you, consumes the color red.

I'm still honestly not sure what to make of that.

As a substitute, I'm sure. I know that isn't all she eats.

[ Plus, she wouldn't have killed all the other vampires on her world if all they ate were colors. ]

It's still bizarre.
