[ Oh, look, it's Kitty Jones. She seems a little tired - though you'd only know it by looking at her. Her voice is unchanged from normal. Indeed, she speaks with her typical firm bubbliness - a cheerful, kindly tone and an adorably youthful London accent obscuring the fact that her speech is (as usual) a bit on the manipulative/calculating/forceful/aggressive side. ]

Hullo, all. First, a job offer. I run a charity garage. It does pretty good work - we fix up and build really, really good cars, and sell 'em to the richer members of the local populace, and then the proceeds go to fund public transit in Heropa. Anyway. I recently... [ Just a little flicker in her smile. ] Lost an employee. So if there's anyone out there who's good with cars or mechanics or whatever, I definitely want you.

[ And now to the less businesslike portion of her announcement: ]

Anyway. Obviously there's been a lot of talk of elections lately, and there's also been a lot of cynicism about the whole electoral process. For obvious reasons. Since there are some politicians who are lunatic idiots. So I guess I just wanted to throw this out there, 'cause all of you have so much different experience from different worlds.

Who had power, where you're from? What was the government like? And were they good - just - or unjust? What do you think's the best form of government? How much power should the people in charge have?

And if you could build a government, build a country from scratch, what would it look like? Would you limit the freedom of the press, or would everyone have the right to speak? Would you build social programs, or would you leave people to fend for themselves? Would you go after warfare and expanding your borders, or would people live in peace?

[ These questions are a little bit leading. Perhaps. ]

Anyway. Share your thoughts, please.

... Look, I've got everything together for the next assignment.

I believe that leadership should go to those who are best suited for it. Just because a person shows a tendency towards violence and aggression doesn't mean they can't lead, but they would make a poor leader for a nation that is peaceful. Oh, I did fail to mention that my world also has a very much more advanced knowledge of how the mind, thoughts and emotions work compared to this one.
hunksmash: (you're joking)

[personal profile] hunksmash 2016-10-20 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
She might say the same thing. [ Actually... ] Or not. Wendy seems like she'd think garage work is super-cool.

Uh. Either way... I guess I can at least apply, right? I mean, you're the boss and all. You get to tell me whether I can apply or not, and I don't-- Geez. I probably need some kinda proof that I can do this stuff, right? Or a resume. With references. That I don't have here.

Of course I did. In addition to technology, of course. Even the top schools on Barrayar had a mix of both.
hunksmash: (why do you hate me)

[personal profile] hunksmash 2016-10-20 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
What? Oh, uh-- [ Also insert a somewhat babbling answer that almost tangents a couple of times but mostly stays on track. Cars aren't his current field, but they were a fondly-remembered stop on the way. ] And that's-- Honestly, I would've figured forever that they're pretty cut-and-dry, at least as far as transport's concerned, but the system that the lions are packing?

[ Cue whistle. And, also, wait: ] They're robots, by the way. Ship robots. You're probably going to think I'm just rambling about animals with hydraulics if I don't... You know. Mention that.

And working with a woman is fine? That's... Is that a thing here? Is it because they're kinda gettin' 50s with it?
dendarii: (point taken)

... I didn't read the syllabus.
hunksmash: (goggles)

[personal profile] hunksmash 2016-10-20 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
[ Is that the clipped hydraulic lady? That's... ] Sure. I can do that.

I mean, probably. Unless cars got way off-base in this world. I usually work with space ships, so cars shouldn't be a problem.

Good.

I'm Saya. I'm one of the mechanics. I live above the shop.

[She seems like she's agreed with his answer, anyway.]

I don't know if it's a thing here, but worlds, well.

They're complicated things. You're not a vampire, are you?
hunksmash: (yeah i dunno bout that)

[personal profile] hunksmash 2016-10-20 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ What? Is that... Is there an ongoing vampire problem? ]

Nnno, Nope. Perfectly normal dude.

If we're not counting the superpowers, I mean. Or the robot space lion stuff.

Do you have a confusing love life that will bleed into work time?

That could be a plus or a minus, honestly.

[ Damen's view of politics is necessarily autocratic; that's the world he lives in. He's about to answer this honestly, and then remembers the ruse he and Laurent are playing. It's with some frustration that he restructures his words. ]

There is no 'press' in my country, and we seem to live well enough without it.

[ The communication it offers is impressive to him, but he has also seen its capacity to make trouble. Not every newspaper is reliable. Such falsehood would never be permitted in Akielos. People might see or hear these things and believe them. The Akielon way is simpler and more efficient, as it is in most respects. ]

I've seen little of how things work here. In my world those who rule are born to the role. The last king of Akielos sought to expand. The new king seeks peace, but he knows that this is not always in his power. Sometimes war begins because someone else is seeking it.

This is something every ruler must understand, whether they are King or President.

[ War is no simple game. Damen does not seek it, but he wouldn't hesitate to respond to it. He watches Kitty curiously. ]

Why are these the only questions you ask?

Hush. Bet you don't have one.

[Lithia is silent for a moment as she considers how to explain this to someone not of her world. In her world it's pretty much a common knowledge sort of thing and even a child would understand what she spoke of to some degree.]

Well, it sounded to a degree like what this place calls psychology, but far more advanced. It is very easy for us to understand what a person is truly like, but we also can use our knowledge and abilities to help them if they wish to change for the better.

[ His expression doesn't change. Damen is honest even in this. ]

Your questions are not about rulers, but the people they rule. No sane King desires to treat his people badly, even if he does so.

Answers to those questions will not tell you which system is best. They only explain your own priorities.
