[ Video ]

[ even though the name says Legosi and he'd normally be a wolf, you get a human today. Who is freaking out, sort of ] I... don't really like this, how do I change to wolf? [ he looks down at his own hands, completely uncomfortable with whatever is happening. Until he realizes he has another question (he has, in fact, hundred of them) ]

This is a lot more complicated than I thought it'd be. I'm fine living in a world with humans, but there are a lot of questions I need answered before I go any further. What is that? [ Legosi turns the communicator towards a computer screen and there is a normal non-humanoid dog on the screen ] I've seen people eating meat, and I've seen people feeding the four-legged-people meat. [ YES he considers animals people too because why wouldn't they be ] I understand the herbivore-carnivore socialization, but I don't understand what is happening here. What are the rules here? Why are you eating meat and why no one cares about that?

[ and since he is already asking things, he will continue to ask things ] Why are there four legged-people and why are birds small and naked, how come no one talks to me, and why does every person look so weird- [ LOOKS THIS IS WEIRD AND YOU ARE ALL WEIRD.

He stops, taking a deep breath, as he is trying to calm down. Okay. Okay. This is just an alien world, he can figure this out. Maybe.

And then there is a silence, until he remembers ]
I would like to talk to a human male teenager about this body, please. [ he also has questions about that, but Legosi figures it's easier to ask someone who is his age ]

[ Being blind, Kanan can't tell exactly what animal he's pointing at, but he can take a guess. ]

Those're animals, not people. They're not sentient, but people keep them as pets, that's why they get fed. Different animals serve different purposes - some are companion animals, like dogs and cats. Some are food animals, like cows and pigs. The animals aren't talking to you because they have no self-awareness.

Also, I was a male human teenager, once upon a time. What sorts of questions do you have?

Those aren't easy questions to answer, because like on most planets, animals are chosen for their various purposes as part of evolutionary processes that happen over thousands and thousands of years. I doubt even someone native to this planet could tell you why some animals are kept as pets and why others are eaten, and why others still are just left alone. No one just up and decides that.

And you don't have to talk to anyone about anything you don't want, but I have been a human male my whole life. Another teenager might be just as confused about things as you are. Teenagers go through a lot of changes.

All right.

There are people here who aren't human. It's just that none of them are native to this planet.

Oh, we've got more than that in the import population. Some of the droids would be particularly annoyed by you lumping them in with humans.

Some of them are. You'll have to be careful which terminology you throw around with them, though. Some of them will get offended if you use the wrong word.

You'd have to ask them. Some of them have particular names for themselves, because they weren't built by other people. They're just non-organic beings with their own culture and history.

And some cultures just call them different things because... different cultures. But it's really not my area of expertise.

Rules? For what? Asking someone about their culture? Sorry to say, the rules might differ from person to person.

The best you can do is be polite and ask questions in good faith. Not everyone will respond to that, no matter how polite you are, but that's not your fault if they do.

You've bumped up against one of the biggest issues about this place. Given how many different kinds of people show up here from different kinds of worlds, all with their own different cultures and sets of beliefs and mores, it's pretty tricky.

Human bodies do take some getting used to. There are people available at... [A pause, as he brings something up on a computer.] De Chima's Family Health Center and the Nonah Public Health Clinic to help explain what to expect and how to take proper care of your new body. I can't guarantee they have any teenagers or young adults employed, though.

Does your world not have people who eat both meat and plants?

[Okay, that throws him for a moment.]

Not even wolves? There isn't one race of people on your world that eats meat?

Perhaps on your world, but it's very much a reality for the vast majority of people currently on this one, both Native and imPort, and for some, a necessity. It won't be an avoidable topic.

[Like him. His sharp teeth aren't just for show. He shakes his head.]

I apologize, I've just never run into something quite like this. It's very rare for me to be surprised by anything anymore, after nearly five years of this place.

[Ah.]

Either you have a very different definition of what classifies as a person from the rest of us, or all the animals of your world are sentient.

Most, if not all, of us find eating other sentient beings to be distasteful as well.
governorkang: (Having fun)

[personal profile] governorkang 2018-11-29 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
[He shrugs.]

As long as you don't stop others from eating non-sentient beings. Vegetarianism isn't that uncommon among the humans here.

It's a meatless diet. Humans choose it for different reasons.
