Hi, sorry if I'm doing this wrong, I'm not used to using the phone like this.

I'm looking for a boy named Erik, he speaks German, I think he's maybe...twelve or fourteen? Maybe younger? I wound up in his dream by accident, or at least I think it was his dream, and I want to make sure he's okay. It was a pretty intense dream for a kid his age. Does anyone know him, or how to find him?

Uh, I don't know how well he speaks English, so I'm gonna repeat this in German just in case.

[Carter swaps over to German, spoken in a German accent, though it's hard to narrow down exactly what part of Germany it might be from.]

The answer comes from someone Carter's not expecting, because he is decades older than he was the last time Carter saw him. And it comes in English.]

[He can certainly see the family resemblance! Carter doesn't even know 'private setting' is a thing currently, but he also doesn't know how to unprivate a conversation.]

I'm him. That was my dream.

Wow! I had no idea. Huh. Well, I guess that answers my question. I just thought someone got taken from the same decade I did.

More like four decades. Which is fine with me. I didn't particularly care for that decade.

You weren't really in the best place to be having that decade, either. So that was...a memory, for you?

There were a few places that were worse, but not many.

[He's quiet for a moment.]

That was a memory. That's not the way it turned out in reality, either.

[He's seen enough of war that he can guess the outcome. His voice is smaller, quieter.] I used to fight guys like that back home. If that helps. We took out a lot of them.

You fought for the Allies?

Yep! American air force. I did work with the German and French resistance, too. Never was inside one of those...those places we were, but I heard about them.

There were a lot of rumors about them that no one believed were true until they had no choice but to face the truth.

I haven't met many American veterans of the war.

They're probably all real old men by now, haha. [The laugh is very forced.] For me, the war was last week and hasn't even ended yet.

The youngest of them wouldn't be that much older than I am.

Maybe? I'm not sure on the math, especially with everyone getting imported and all that.

But! Important part's you're okay. And also not a little kid. Except I guess you were a little kid before, but not now...

[He trails off, trying to organize his thoughts.]

Where I come from, at least. I don't know about here.
