I think it takes... different factors for each individual. Metalhawk found his recently. Bumblebee didn't seem to have much difficulty. I'm not sure with the rest... Starscream figured out how to regain his Cybertronian form, in bursts. Knock Out can do it. You might get ideas from talking around with all of them.
