Hey fellow imports [Lacey waves.]

There's less than three weeks until Thanksgiving.   Canadian Thanksgiving, that is.    I want to celebrate and can't have a proper dinner on my own.   Even with my powers, I couldn't eat a whole turkey.  [And she doesn't want to be alone on her first major holiday on this world.]  So here's a question - I'm wondering if there would be any interest in a dinner party hosted by me.

[She pauses for a moment.]

Oh, that's not a question.  Would anyone like to come to a dinner on the 14th of October?   

There, that's a question.  I'm guessing for most of you, that's just another Monday.  Why not make it special?   We can think of things we're thankful for, or just talk in general, and enjoy plenty of good food.  If you can't make it to dinner, you can still join drinks and dessert afterwards.   We could play games, cards, or more talking.  There'll be more details when it gets closer. It'll be great!

What's Thanksgiving? I mean, for you. I've heard what it is for Americans, is it the same for Canadians?

( She shrugs a bit, because it's not like it matters, really. She doesn't know Lacey well, but she knows Lacey's nice and she'd liked talking to her. Why not spend the other woman's holiday with her? It's not like Rikki has anything else she ought to be doing; she'll just call out sick at H2Glo. )

The history behind it is different and we don't have the crazy shopping the next day.   We do have big turkey dinners with all the fixings and getting together with family or friends.

Some people connect Canadian Thanksgiving to Martin Frobisher arriving in Canada. Other people connect it to a meal Samuel de Champlain had with Europeans and First Nations people. And some people find those reasons problematic because of the way First Nations people were treated historically, so they prefer to celebrate the harvest, or the last days of nice weather before winter.

I don't suppose you'd accommodate someone arriving early to observe? Some of us need all the help we can get, when it comes to cooking.

[Mostly the ones used to subsisting off rations, or having droids or staff handle it.]

[That's interesting. He certainly know about the Thanksgiving that's celebrated here in the United States, but didn't realize the country next door had a different one.]

I never understood that, to be honest. The shopping day I mean. Glad to hear that Canadians have a bit more sense.

To be honest, it depends on where in Canada. We don't have any crazy shopping near our Thanksgiving. But a lot of stores in Canada are American owned chains and they have the same sales. So on American Black Friday, there can be a lot of shopping in Canada too in the big cities.

I suppose everyone likes to save money. It has to do with the Christmas holiday doesn’t it? I don’t think I’ll ever quite understand the desire for shopping beyond getting what one needs. I don’t see the appeal.

Really?   You've never wanted to treat yourself?   Christmas shopping is about gifts for others too.  There's something really satisfying about finding the perfect gift for someone to show what they mean to you.

[She's never actually been good at picking out presents though.]

Shopping isn’t exactly what I would call treating myself. Jedi have no need for personal possessions.

A good meal would be treating myself.

None at all? [She looks genuinely confused.] Not even a toothbrush?

Then Thanksgiving will be an amazing treat!

Necessary things to live certainly, but that is generally all aside from our weapons. But even then, when I was in the Order, necessary items were provided to us.

Oh it will certainly be a treat. I'm looking forward to it.

What about personalized items? Or sentimental keepsakes? Photos?

[It's a lot to take in. She's never needed much, but she does miss a few clothing articles from home and photos of her late Aunt Ruby.]

We Jedi lead very simple lives. Not that we have nothing, and may have a few sentimental items, but it’s kept to a minimum.
