[ The video starts focused on Ruby's face. ]

It's customary to post one of these when something really good happens, right?

[ She moves her phone a little, making it focus on a medium-sized dog beside her. The dog is clearly a mutt, but those who know about dog breeds would no doubt notice there was at least a little samoyed in there - more due to the length and cloudlike texture of the fur than the mottled brown colour not at all typical of the breed. Shades of the breed's typical features can be seen in the shape of both body and face. Well. As much as can be gathered by how the dog has stuffed its face partially into the crook of her elbow. ]

Meet Yuki. He was a stray not all that long ago. I was going to give him to the pound after getting him his vaccinations and stuff but, well. He's attached more than usual.

[ He's not the only one, but she's not going to admit that. The dog yawns and snuggles into her a little more, she adjusts the camera just in time to see the last bit of a smile aimed at the dog before she looks back to the camera itself. ]

I guess that's all I wanted to say?

[ Closed to Jane, of the She-Thor variety. ]

Uh, Could I ask you a question that's sort of private? Private for me. As in. I don't want someone else to know I'm asking?

Isn't Yuki a girl's name though?

[Not that he has room to talk dog names.]

[ She laughs a little. ]

Yuki can be a boy's name, too. My given name can be for both girls and boys, so why not give him a name that can do the same?

[ She didn't take it as criticism at all, just a question. ]

True enough. Hmph. Not like the natives of this place'd know any better anyway.

You need any dog toys or-?

[ Oh and now she grins. ]

You should come with me to pick some toys out for him. And his own set of bowls and stuff. I have the bowls I use for the other dogs I take home to clean up and all, but I read it's a good idea to have a different set, and a way to keep the dogs separate. I have the latter, but not the former yet.

Where do you want to meet? You should bring Mutt.

[... He should protest. Really.

But who is he kidding; he's Weak and he knows it (is it really so bad, though? he'd do anything for her after all). He'd totally have suggested going with her if she hadn't assumed.]

There's this pet supply shop in De Chima I go to when I pick up food for the animals, so we should meet there.

[ a few seconds and he has a message with the address. ]

They help with some of the more... Unique problems I run into. They know how to research things I can't figure out how to look up in English, and that don't exist in Japanese because the fauna isn't local. They'll probably be really excited to be helping me with something normal for once!

[ Oh how cheerful she sounds! ]

Sounds like a good place. Hmph. But, you're saying I should arrive on Shiko? Sure thing.

Awww, whatever. Probably more work than is worth it, huh?

[ Oh and how she GRINS. ]

Oh, absolutely show up on Shiko. It'll be fine!

Anyway, see you there soon!

[ Ruby wasn't all that far away, anyway. So she'll probably get there first and stand around outside waiting for him. ]

[And arrive on Shiko he does, the giant bat doing an elegant -completely showing off because of course- spiral down before it lands without much issue.

And then it ambles towards Ruby with a chitter while Niko dismounts. also clearly showing off if the shit-eating cocky grin's any clue.]

So? How'd we do?

[ Ruby grins at them both. ]

Ten out of ten. I think you're going to the next round, boys!

[And with that, Niko takes an elabrate showman's bow while Shiko sadfaces at Ruby. No pettings? no love??? But He did good????]

Hmph. Might wanna give him a pet or something - but I think I spoiled him too much, too.

[Says the one who's grinning and angled towards said bat.]

[ Oh and how Ruby grins at that, at the feeling of the crobat's concern. She happily sends it emotions in response - praise, affection - and moves to pet it, paying attention to if any specific area gets greater happiness than others. ]

[ Yuki, meanwhile, is off of a leash and looking torn between running and hiding, even with Ruby confirming to him that this large predator is safe. ]

[All the happy chittering as the friendship evolution soaks up the attention. ahh yes, there, right there on his front, yes! Yess! He's a Good and she's a Good and never stop the pettings or scrittches.

Niko, meanwhile, rolls his eyes, gives a brief pat before heading off to Yuki and squatting down, hand half out.]

... Guess you're cute.

[ Oh how Ruby delights in this exchange, and she makes sure the Crobat knows it. ]

[ Yuki gives Ruby a look, sending a curiousness to her. The girl turns her head and nods, sending a sense of reassurance. The dog gets a little closer, sniffing Niko's hand a few seconds before giving him a gentle lick on the palm of his hand. ]

Hey, cute dog. Congrats!

You the one who named him?

I am. Probably would have worked better with a white dog, because that's what most people over here seem to know the name to mean, but I still like it.

Hey, if he answers to Yuki, he's a Yuki.

Don't think I've ever seen a pup of his breed before. Or is he a mix?

[ He wasn't too familiar with dog breeds beyond the most unmistakable of the bunch. Alas. ]

He's probably a mix. He was a stray before I picked him up. He's real fluffy though.

[ Ruby... 'Fluffy' isn't a breed... ]

I'll say. He looks like a cloud with paws. Never had a dog myself, but uh... maybe I'll get the chance, if what people are telling me about this place is true.

How'd the two of ya meet? Was he just wanderin' around, looking for spare takeout?

He FEELS like a cloud with paws. When I found him he was a total mess, but two baths later and he's so soft I'm surprised he doesn't float away. What things have people been telling you? I've been here about a year and a half now, so I may be able to tell you if the things are true.

Yeah, sorta. I take in strays and get them cleaned up, get them their shots, help sort out some behavioural issues, then bring them to the shelter closest to where I picked them up. Well, unless that shelter is bordering on full, then I take the dog to another nearby shelter. I like dogs, and I wasn't ready to have one of my own, and I would feel how much they wanted homes and well... I got a hobby?

That people disappear from here and go back home, and then come back? Granted, I never thought I'd get sucked into another world, period, but... that's pretty wild. Like having an interdimensional second life.

Oh, so you're a pro at picking up wanderin' pooches! Must've been a matter of time before ya found the right pup.

[ Urge to pet dog... rising... ]

Sounds like ya really lucked into the right gig.

Yeah. Sometimes people don't come back here, but they always, so far as we know, go back where they came from. But they usually eventually come back. I like it here. I have a way better deal going on here than in my world.

I am absolutely a pro. It started out as just something I could do to help the dogs I ran into and turned into something I loved doing. I guess it was only a matter of time until I found the dog I needed.

[ Give in, the fluff seems to say. Pet. Pet. ]

Absolutely. Funny thing is it has nothing to do with my assigned job. But thanks to it I now have a plan for what I want to do in the future? Wild as that is.

Oh? Continuin' on with taking in strays, or do ya mean more like bein a vet?

I don't know whether this place is better'n home yet. It's different, that's for sure. [ And there were less people trying to, say, pull a knife on him... but Majima sort of enjoyed being kept on his toes. ]

There's, uh, a lot less trash? But I also talked to a lady who told me all about how some bozos kidnapped her, so I guess some things never change.

Well, I'm going to continue to take in strays, but what I think I'm going to do is go into zoo sciences. I have the ability to communicate with animals, so I can be real helpful in a lot of ways. Working at a zoo itself as a keeper is far from out of the question, too. A lot of zoos have gotten into conservation, and I care about that, too. So it's one of those weird intersections where I care about a job and am good at it.

Yeah, I think kidnapping happens in all worlds, and among imPorts it's not uncommon. Still a lot better than my situation in my world. It varies for everyone I think.

You can talk to animals?

What do they say?

Communicate, not talk. They don't really say words? Not to me, anyway. It's more like a bunch of feelings sorta? It's hard to explain. I mean, feelings are hard, but when it comes to animals theirs make a lot more sense.

Huh. So it's kind of like knowing if they're hungry or upset?

Sounds like a good skill to have, either way.

Sort of. Very similar. It's sometimes really precise, but other times stupidly imprecise. But we get what the other is going for in the end.

It absolutely is. I've had it my whole life so maybe my imagination is just failing here, but I have no idea how I'd get through life as long as I have without it.
