This is a really weird question but... what do you call your grandparents?

My grandfather says "Grandfather" is too formal but "Grandpa" is taken and calling him by his first name would just be weird.

[This is so not a problem she was prepared for. Time travel is weird.]

Grandad's what I use for mine!

I guess you use grandpa for the other one?

Why not the same thing? They're both the same familial link.

There's a lot of "weird". What's weird? Worrying about a name that doesn't matter. Ask them if they're here, or give them 1 and 2 at the end of their names. If they don't come up often, then that solves your problem entirely.

Dziadek and Babcia. They were Polish. My other grandparents were Grandma and Grandpa. Do you know any ways to say Grandpa in a cool alien language?

Shyriiwook..like Chew..like a Wookie language? That's cool. What about calling him Gramps?

You know Chewbacca too?

Yeah, and if he's ever in a bad mood, you can call him grumps.

Holy shit!  My mom would never let me have a cool babysitter like that.  I mean, we didn't have wookies.  But if we did, my mom wouldn't have allowed it.

[He grins.]  So, who's your grandfather anyway?

My mom had a hard time seeing past people's differences and seeing the good about them.

[Woah.  Eddie might have been able to figure that out with her family tree, but he still thinks of him as darth vader.]  Oh..that's..wow.  Is he a good grandfather?

Young is good. [Eddie says quickly. It's much better than the idea of having him there as Vader.] He's not too old to do fun stuff.

I can't say I ever knew mine, so knowing what to call them was never an issue.

The closest familial link I ever spoke with besides my mother was the ghost of my long-dead ancestor. And I'm not about to propose you call anyone blood of my blood.

[It was weird enough being called "flesh of my flesh" all the damned time, he wouldn't wish the other on anyone.]

But if "grandfather" annoys him, all the more reason to go with it. Tell him to put on his big boy robes and deal with it.

I don't see how.

If you never knew them before, practically speaking it's no different from meeting a stranger. Or a new in-law, if you insist on using familial relations for this scenario.

Whether they're alive or dead doesn't really matter.

I still say you're needlessly complicating matters. Does it really matter what you call him, so long as he understands it's him you're referring to?

It was my understanding grandparents were meant to spoil their grandchildren.

[Not from personal experience, of course, any familial relations of his were long since dead. But a combination of people watching and noticing several tacky apparel items was certainly indicating a trend.]

I use Granddad or Nonno, depending on which one I'm speaking about or to.

To be honest I don't know much, just enough to use it for nicknames for my grandparents and to curse a little.

The important things, you know?

It's a useful skill to have. Fuck asking where the bathroom is, what's really important is being able to curse out a shitty driver.

[ Huh. Somehow, this isn't a topic he'd ever, in his life, really stopped to consider. ]

I don't have grandparents, so I can't advise here. Is it weird, getting to know them now?

Kind of sucks being stuck here, but it can also bring people experiences they never would've had back in their home universes. I guess it can also be a blessing sometimes.

Well, I can't help you with that. I've never had a grandfather myself.

I'm not sure if it matters what people actually say, provided you call him what feels right. What I would do is look up each of the terms. See where they're from. If you're going to borrow a word, you may as well know the culture it's from.
