The evolution of language is not something I have ever delved much into, and yet now, its effects are more important to me than ever.

I have been here for a few months, and while the communicator allows me to communicate with everyone, not knowing the local language is a handicap I do not have the luxury of maintaining. Even finding people that know my native Arabic, or another language I speak, poses a challenge as between my time in the year 1191 and now the language has changed.

... To get to my point, while I realize it's a small chance, I am posting here to ask for help. Be it someone that could teach me, or just resources I could use, I appreciate any help you could offer.

I'm saying that because I'm surprised you haven't found it yourself. I thought your lot knew everything about observation and infiltration.

I did find it. I simply presumed its collection to be in the local language.

They have books on languages. Quite a few. You may want to starts with the ones written for children.

What other languages do you know already?

Hebrew, Greek and French.

I don't suppose it's Ancient Greek?

The one we see in Homeric texts and the like? I'm more comfortable with what was contemporary Greek in my time, but I can understand it in written form.

im not sure how much help i can be, im pretty terrible at languages, but uh. i speak arabic. and english. i could translate, or something?

The language changing over time, depending of when you're from, could still be a problem, but I appreciate the offer nonetheless. If nothing else, it will make it easier.

sure! im about 800 years ahead of you, so somethings 'll definitely be different, but w/e we can figure it out

language and its evolution never ceases to be a curious thing
particularly the way it can parallel between universes at precisely the most convenient point
one wonders if it hadnt decided on a specific destination that was then mapped out through millennia of cultural progression

unfortunately i only know english
that being the local term for it at least
but i know it very well if you need any pointers

You bring up an intriguing thought... It is clear we are not all simply people from different points in a single timeline, and yet language wise, there is no shortage of commonalities. One would think there would be divergences, correct?

some divergences certainly
even if the language is the same it is approached a little differently
though in that specific case it isnt completely surprising on its own as the actual mechanics behind it are just a wonder to consider
i cant imagine the reasons such synchronicity is present in other universes though

what have you learned already
that may give us some kind of starting point

Very little; mostly some vocabulary. I had someone teaching me, but he was sent back home. We never really got very far.

Which languages do you speak?

Like I said, my native language is Arabic. Besides that, I speak French, Greek and Hebrew.

I speak fluent French myself; I'm afraid any knowledge I have of the others is academic at best.

Do you happen to know how different the contemporary French from my time is from yours?

The translation function is more efficient than learning a new language from scratch.

[Who has time to learn English when there's so much else to know first and it can just be translated into ~~Japanese~~ ~~Narutoese~~ your language for you.]

There is truth in what you say, but relying on the translation forever is hardly a good plan. The communicator is an object that can be broke, lost, or stolen as any other. Without it, I'd be stranded.

Not necessarily. Memorize the locations of the Porters--should such a thing occur, you can get the item replaced. In the event of an emergency where you are unable to, I've read that 'S.O.S' is internationally recognized as a distress call here, as is 'Mayday.'
