Heropa and other assorted hero-cities, today's my birthday. Yup, I knew I had a good start in life when I found out I was Mom's little April fool.

My beer has finished brewing, so if you are of legal age, you can come to The New Hangout in Heropa to try some of it. Come down anyway even if you're not of legal age and I'll have cake and ice cream. It'll be a fun party, my treat.

I just...got caught up in work, and then...some...things...

I was engaged, but uh...there was an accident, and she...didn't make it.

[Castle winces at that, remembering the many times he'd come close to losing Kate. And the time he'd come close to losing Alexis. And then there was Roy...]

...I'm sorry to hear that. I can't imagine it was easy to... move on to someone else afterward.

No. I guess...moving on's the hardest part.

[He probably had it worse than some, but there has been extenuating, outside circumstances involved in that one.]

That's the funny thing about life, though.

And you have no choice but to move on, even when you don't feel like you can.

Can't say that I've ever been there... but I know my fiance was. She lost her mother to a murder that was never solved and nearly lost herself trying to figure out what had happened. Get some sort of closure.

[Yes, this is good. I don't want to talk about my crazy anyway.]

Yeah? Did she ever get anywhere?

[Castle will gladly let the subject change if he wants.]

We got closer than she ever did on her own, but haven't quite been able to bring the person responsible to justice yet. We'll get there, though. I have all the confidence in the world in her.

Her? [He raised an eyebrow.] You said "we".

I've been helping her as much as I can, but it's really Kate's case in the end. I'm not actually a cop, so she'll be the one who ultimately brings the perp in. I'll be on the sidelines with the metaphorical pompoms.

[That gets a smile.]

What, she doesn't deserve actually pompoms?

[Castle laughed.]

See, I'd love to have some, but she might give me crap for it. Plus, it tends to break the dramatic tension of the scene.

Not necessarily. Maybe you should color-coordinate them.

I could coordinate with her fellow detectives, too- "Gimme a K! Gimme an A! Gimme a T! Gimme an E! What's that spell? KATE!" Then she'd have to disown all of us.

[And that he outright laughs at it.]

I'd pay to see that.
