[ Carl is exhausted. This sort of thing hits too close to home, and his attempts at isolation and surviving without infection really does frays at his nerves. At least back home there are abandoned houses to take temporarily shelter in.

But it's a familiar kind of exhaustion, one that Carl doesn't take for granted. It feels almost like home, despite the loss home always takes in. ]

So, how's everyone is holding up, generally? I mean I know things are getting really bad - Heropa especially - but back home I always felt that just talking about things sort of make things easier.

I want to think that! I'm worried about my friends and my dog.

That's perfectly normal. I worried about my family too back home. But it is possible to think everything will be fine and still be worried.

I'm...not worried about my family back home. Somemone is from a later time than I am, and everything...works out all right.

Did things get bad like this in the world you came from?

They got pretty bad, yeah. No more civilization, basically. All the towns and cities are being reclaimed by the wild.

How did it happen? Did people get sick like they are here or did something attack you?

A virus. It basically burned people up from the inside, and when they die they come back. It's not so different from these zombie films people like to watch here.

[ It's so weird, to see a genre of films that is more or less the same life Carl has lived in. Half the time the deaths are the same kind of deaths Carl has seen from others. It doesn't upset him, but he cannot deny the weirdness of it all. ]

You mean they went around wanting to eat brains and flowers? That's horrible!

[Don't mind her, she's also been exposed to Plants vs Zombies as well as movies. She may be a little confused.]

Wasn't there any way you could help them?

[ ....plants? ]

No. Once you became infected, there's no cure. The best way you can do is to make sure people don't suffer and die peacefully.

Oh. That's... That's really sad.

[There's a flicker of something sympathetic behind her eyes, and understanding almost.]

But it's good that you can help them go peacefully. That's important, and it means a lot.

[ Small mercies usually means a bullet to the head, to prevent reanimation. But he doesn't want to discuss the details. ]
