They're trying to prove something by not answering, I suppose. That they're above such a question, or that asking such a thing is wrong somehow.
But if they were truly above it they wouldn't bother answering in the first place, so I suppose it loops back around to the eternal answer of "I'm not sure, because people are strange."
It does shed light on people's characters, though. Much more efficiently than if they'd just answered the question.
