[ Kakashi turned the small communicator over in his hand a few times, curious if the thing was as flimsy as it looked and why anyone would pick something so ridiculously breakable-seeming as the sole communication device for a 'hero.' ]

[ Something this thin, with that much glass? It wouldn't last ten seconds with most of the heroes he knew. Naruto alone would probably break it just trying to turn it on and if not then, all it would take is a punch from Sakura and the device would be shattered. ]

[ He had spent the day watching his feed fill up with confused newcomer after confused newcomer, people seeking out friends and loved ones and information. Finally Kakashi turned on the audio to make his own such post. ]

[ A sigh. It was probably a long shot anyway. His voice lost whatever authoritative edge it had in lieu of a lazy, casual tone, almost bored. ]

Well, it looks like I'm not alone in the "unintended vacation" group. Uh, if anyone has directions to a bookstore or an idea where someone can get a good bowl of ramen, I would appreciate it.

...This is Sai, reporting in. Uzumaki Naruto is also present in this world, as is Hyuuga Hinata of Team Eight and the Kazekage. The five of us are currently the only shinobi residing in this world.

[ Kakashi has a little trouble getting the video to work. At first he thinks he cut the connection entirely until he realizes he actually turned on the back-facing camera instead of the front-facing one. There. Better.]

Oh, hey Sai. [ So many of them. More than Kakashi really thought luck would let him have. And they were alive and well and safe here. ]

If you mean where I'm living, I think it's called Heropa.

What is this, why is the great copy ninja addressing him so casually??? It's weird. He's still getting used to the whole idea of friends in the first place, so Kakashi talking to him like someone like Naruto might throws him for a loop. But he recovers himself well enough after a moment.]

Naruto and I are in Heropa as well. The others are assigned to Nonah, north of here by several hundred miles, but much more rapidly accessible through the Porters.

[ It's barely perceptible, but he notes that it takes Sai a moment to respond and wonders what, if anything, that was about. Was Kakashi supposed to be dead? Was that it? Maybe that wasn't really something he wanted to inquire about further. He'd let it go. The kid seemed to have it together quickly enough that it wasn't that much of an issue. Maybe it was just the usual awkward Sai. ]

Well, I ventured out to explore. I'm in some sort of shopping district nearby, if that's helpful. I can head back if you'd prefer to meet at the housing.

That would be helpful, if you don't mind, sir. After you finish speaking with Hinata-san, I'll be waiting there. It shouldn't be difficult to find me.

[She's chewing her lower lip, head canted to the right as she puzzles over what to do next. Allied Shinobi Forces leaves no doubt of his when so best to start there.]

I'm sorry for the abruptness. I- It's just very important that I or Gaara talk to you before you talk to Naruto-kun.

[She looks positively nervous now that she's more or less given an order to someone who outranks her. Please don't hold it against her.]

[ He's starting to get this video thing figured out now. Her abruptness and forwardness surprises but does not offend him. At this point, they are briefing him, and that's an odd feeling, but clearly this must be important. Besides, he knows of Hinata's affection for Naruto. ]

I'm at a, uh, shopping district in Heropa, just a few minutes from the housing sector here. I can't really give you anything more specific than that since I'm not very sure myself.

[She smiles a tiny bit as her nervousness seems to have been put to rest with his positive response. At least for the moment.]

[ He's waiting outside of a pet store, sitting on a bench with book in hand when Hinata arrives. It occurs to Kakashi that he probably shouldn't assume she still has her Byakugan here--or that it operates in the same way--considering the supplemental material he's received suggests that abilities may have changed slightly. Still, he's so used to trusting that skill (Team Eight, after all, excels at tracking) that it feels insulting to just tell her where he's at. So he waits, watching the crowd until he finally spots her.

When she comes into view, Kakashi stands to greet her, giving a closed-eye smile even though he's got an inkling of dread about whatever she has to say. ]

Looks like you've beat Naruto to the punch. What was so urgent?

[It's a good thing the network can operate via telepathy, because any more complicated interaction with technology is far beyond Zuko.

He's only answering now because he recognizes this guy, and he doesn't know anyone else here. Zuko is leaning in with his arms folded, peering suspiciously at him and the communicator. He's not sure which one will bite first.]

That doesn't sound like a nation. It sounds like a task force. [He's thinking of the group that had invaded on the Day of Black Sun.]

... I did some scouting. I didn't waste any time on ramen, [and he rolls his eyes,] but I did find a 'book' store. [Because what are books, seriously? What happened to scrolls?]

[ Fancy meeting you here. Needless to say, Kakashi looks vaguely amused to see the familiar face. ]

That's because it isn't a nation. [ He doesn't supply much else right now, though he's prepared to answer if asked. ]

And did you now. You'd be surprised the kind of things you can find out while catching lunch or having a cup of tea. [ He caught that change of tone over the word 'book,' mister. ] But what do you have against books?

[Don't worry, Zuko and subtlety are not acquainted.] Then what is it? And where are you from?

[He's interested in countries because he's still having a hard time wrapping his head around how many of them there are here.

He doesn't have any problem betraying his ignorance, either.] That they're not scrolls? [he snarks, slumping.] Everything is different here. I'm not going to just sit down and have tea! [In short, he's overwhelmed and trying to adjust.]

[ Dryly. ] Oh? But I hear tea has great calming effects.

Calm down. Books are just a different format for the scroll, that's all. You'll get used to it. [ Probably. The comm was a little weird and Kakashi wasn't sure he was going to get used to that. Or cars. Or planes. Or any of the other number of things he was seeing around this city that he didn't even have names for yet. It was such a culture shock. ] You'll acclimate quickly enough if you keep your head together.

As for where I'm from... [ Shrug. ] I'm from Konoha, a village located in the Land of Fire. Team Seven is my squad.

Do I look calm to you? [he asks sourly, though in point of fact, Zuko doesn't seem especially distraught. He's come out the other side of his freak out and has settled into thoroughly irritated, but not exploding.

He manages to swallow a rather whiny but I shouldn't have to get used to it! Look at Zuko maturing.] Not like I have a choice, [he mutters instead.] I'm still collecting intel! I'm following your advice, okay?

--Wait, the Land of Fire? [Zuko abruptly straightens up, his teenage disgruntlement falling away into intense interest as he leans in comically close to the phone camera.] Like the Fire Nation?

Maybe you haven't been drinking enough tea. [ He really wants things to work out for Zuko, but right now, Kakashi's not informed enough of their situation to really help out much. That actually bothers him. ]

[ And he gives an amused smile as he gets a closeup of Zuko's face. ] I don't know how much you can consider us a nation. We're ruled by a daimyo, but Konoha is mostly self-governing.

[His whole face scrunches up in palpable distaste at the suggestion that he drink more tea, but he forcibly discards that (and the other aborted conversational thread) to focus on the one that matters to him.

Nations, of course. He's single-minded.

It's a profound relief that what Kakashi's describing sounds, if not normal, then recognizable and sensible. He lets out a gust of air.] Isn't it crazy here? [he asks, rather like someone who thinks he's found someone to commiserate with.] There's so many countries, it's insane! I'm from the Fire Nation, that's why I asked. Actually, I'm the Fire Lord.

[He's very matter-of-fact about it. Zuko is through pretending to be someone he's not, after how long and how much effort it had taken him to get here.]

Oh this is cute. [Leans on a hand.]

[Allied Shinobu Forces. Aww.]

[ Fairly deadpan. ] Oh yeah. That's me, the epitome of cute.

[Deadpan he's used to. Though this man's a step ahead in that he's actually playing along. He smiles.]

That settles it then, willing to give a name? Or would you trade for the location of an extensive bookstore? Though, if it's research you want, are you familiar with the internet? You can find anything there.

Inter-Net? [ A regular bookstore he could probably find on his own anyway. But this internet thing sounds promising. ] How about you explain how to access this 'inter-net' and then I'll give you my name.

I could always show you in person. Though if you really 'think' about it, you have a telepathic connection with your communicator. You should be able to access everything just by having the will to.

[ Kakashi highly doubts he can access 'everything' just by thinking it--surely no useful secrets--so he tries something he thinks could work, just to test. Sure enough, plenty of dog pictures, some with random text on them. Oh hey, it works.

When he tries searching for his kind of reading material, a certain popular trilogy comes up with the option to download an ebook. Ah! There we go. And right from where he sat, too. He might never need to leave the house again. ]

Sadly, you'll find that ramen is still considered a niche food. It's a little distressing. I miss it. [ Not as much as he laments the lack of readily available curry now that he can actually taste it, but. ]

It's not as niche as everything else, a fact for which I am thankful. [ Americans. ] I suppose now that some of us can travel abroad, we can actually gain better access to things that this country considers 'foreign'. ]

Everything else? Then what do they eat here?

Burgers and steak? Also, they deep-fry a surprising amount of items. I think I saw someone deep fry butter once.

It's just...very odd. I've gotten used to the food selection, but that doesn't mean I like it very much. [ It's been alleviated somewhat by living in De Chima #1, but he's still going to complain about it at least a little. ]

Which city are you in? There are a vast number of bookstores here. You'll find this world does everything in abundance.

Everything is in abundance, or just retail? I've noticed a lot of clothing stores and at least three separate buildings labeled Starbucks, but what else should I be aware of?

Whatever they care for here is repeated not much of a walk away. It is strange to me. Almost as if the people do not have legs to use.

[ But. ] If you set off from the apartments there is one quite close. Next to one of those Starbucks.

Well, they do have those... vehicles. Maybe none of them are accustomed to walking anymore.
But then what do I know about city planning.
[ So many repeated locations. There weren't nearly this many of one kind of store in Konoha. It didn't seem crowded enough to warrant so much overlap. Maybe he's right. Maybe people didn't walk after all. ]

I think they're no longer accustomed to all manner of physical activity. [ Athos is a grumpy 17th century man. He doesn't understand the ease of the cities and just how gentle it is on all who inhabit it. ]

They are in abundance of literature though, I will allow them that.

...I do know of a couple bookstores. Which I recommend depends on whether you're the sort who prefers brand new books or second hand, though.
