Hypothetically speaking, if someone were to start watching movies... where should they begin? What are the essential ones?
[THIS IS TOTALLY HYPOTHETICAL, he is in no way talking about himself, shhh. Klarion's sticking to audio because... well, frankly, it's halfway through July in the middle of Florida, living in the basement doesn't help with the heat that much, and he's kinda half-melted by this point.]

As for the genres, I don't... really know? I've only ever seen one. From what I remember, it was quite explosive.

[He sounds delighted. Klarion, you're becoming a modern man!]

I'm thinking about it, anyway. Half the people up here seem to speak exclusively in pop-culture references, it's like learning another language.

[ Malformed rodent does not sound like the stuff children's dreams are made off. ] Not all of the films have him in it though.

But as a member of another species who has developed at least passing familiarity with certain areas of human cinema, I hear you. I don't mind lending a little expertise.
How do you feel about romcoms?

As to your guessing about my circumstances, you're half-right, it's a little of both.

As a genre, your typical human romcom deals with a man and a woman who are both seeking love, even if or especially if one or more of them currently has a cynical attitude about romance. They meet and form a connection, but certain obstacles form and they're both forced to confront their own belief system. In watching, we're also being confronted with our own attitudes towards romance, and in particular our attitudes of the form romance is 'supposed' to take are called into question.
Some of the best human movies of this genre are also a little irreverent in tone, taking a satirical view of modern human life that both illuminates human values but also finds a lot of humor in the situation! I'd say the best of that genre is Good Luck Chuck starring human comedian Dane Cook, though I'd add that you probably can't go wrong with anything Adam Sandler has been in.
