Hypothetically speaking, if someone were to start watching movies... where should they begin? What are the essential ones?

[THIS IS TOTALLY HYPOTHETICAL, he is in no way talking about himself, shhh. Klarion's sticking to audio because... well, frankly, it's halfway through July in the middle of Florida, living in the basement doesn't help with the heat that much, and he's kinda half-melted by this point.]

It's a good thing! I mean, you could go for the actual classics, but I haven't even watched 'em anyway... it really depends on what you like. Do you wanna watch people talk, or do you wanna watch things explode?

Disney. All of the Disney. You should start with Snow White for the classics and then the whole Pixar collection. Literally that's how everyone starts with films. Cartoons.

Mickey, sure.

[ Malformed rodent does not sound like the stuff children's dreams are made off. ] Not all of the films have him in it though.

Oh shit! Yeah, I hear you, man. It's difficult to know where exactly to start when you're delving into the cinematic history of another species. At least, I assume it's another species. Maybe you're just a human who is critically culturally repressed, or maybe I'm prying into something that isn't my fucking business.

But as a member of another species who has developed at least passing familiarity with certain areas of human cinema, I hear you. I don't mind lending a little expertise.

How do you feel about romcoms?
bloodpressured: (in a land of make believe)

[personal profile] bloodpressured 2015-07-20 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Romantic comedies. If you're a fan of drama I have recommendations there, too, but generally I find human dramas somewhat lacking, whereas their romantic comedy selection is decent.

As a genre, your typical human romcom deals with a man and a woman who are both seeking love, even if or especially if one or more of them currently has a cynical attitude about romance. They meet and form a connection, but certain obstacles form and they're both forced to confront their own belief system. In watching, we're also being confronted with our own attitudes towards romance, and in particular our attitudes of the form romance is 'supposed' to take are called into question.

Some of the best human movies of this genre are also a little irreverent in tone, taking a satirical view of modern human life that both illuminates human values but also finds a lot of humor in the situation! I'd say the best of that genre is Good Luck Chuck starring human comedian Dane Cook, though I'd add that you probably can't go wrong with anything Adam Sandler has been in.

Let's see...there's Snow White, and The Princess Bride, and Roman Holiday, and The Swan Princess, and The Little Mermaid...want some more?

[ Hime has a type and that type is princesses. ]

[personal profile] friendshiprocks 2015-07-20 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Not all of them. Roman Holiday's got more to it than just princesses.

[ but it has princesses. they're all princess movies. ]

Action movies are usually explosion movies. Summer blockbuster types usually have a lot of big bangs too.
