Yet Another Mask l Video

[The video turns on to reveal a man who is very comfortable on camera. His body posture is easy and the smile on his face is warm with a hint of natural charm. Malcolm waits a moment before speaking once he is sure the camera is on and pointed in the right direction.]

Good Morning ladies and gentleman. My name is Malcolm Meryln and I am yet another new arrival to this interesting city. While Florida isn't my most ideal place to live, I am looking forward to getting to know you all.

I also find myself in the interesting position of being the community planner for this city and the ImPorts who live here. If you have any questions or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me. I want to make this a city we all can enjoy no matter the power level and political leanings.

Florida really isn't so bad once you get used to it; it's better than Kansas in any case.

[Malcolm chuckles.]

Sadly I haven't been to Kansas either...but I have been to some other places that are worse then this.

A few places. This is quite the new leaf, if you're willing to turn it over. What did you do before?

I ran my own technology company among other things.

[Malcolm isn't giving away all his secrets just yet. There might be some who will work out what is hidden beneath his well dressed and charming personality But for now he's playing the game.]

Oh, then this is quite the change for you. No hope to rebuild your empire here?

{Malcolm is indeed planning on building something just not a company. He smiles.]

Oh I don't know. I'm not sure this world needs my skill set just yet. I'll have to get a feel for the place first.

Well, if there's ever anything you need--any advice, or... Are you a Godly man, Malcolm?

[ Using first names when they've only just met... Just this side of rude. ]

[Malcolm laughs harshly. He hadn't believed in God since his wife was so cruelly taken from him.]

No...I've believed in a God since he left the one thing I cared about on a street to die as people walked past. Why ask?

Good morning. I'm Francis Urquhart, I'm the Undersecretary of imPort Public Relations. So if there's anything I can do to help you, even if it's just to settle, then I shall be delighted.

[A nod.] So what is your ideal place to live?

Somewhere cool with access to some of the finer things in life.

Then we shall have to agree there. Spent all my life in England and Scotland. Wet het doesn't quite do it for me.

I spent some time in England as a boy. My father sent me to boarding school there. While foggy London does have it's downsides I enjoyed getting to know the people I met there.

Yes, our boarding schools are excellent. And the people can be interesting too.

Good interesting or bad interesting?

Well, I find that sort of thing depends entirely on your perspective on life.

I always try to see the potental in people until they prove otherwise.

How magnanimous of you. I'm sure they appreciate it.

Not always no. People for some reason don't trust me.

I'm sorry to hear it. [ Only a few people don't trust him. These people are smart, of course. But his manner is so tongue in cheek about his disassembling 'I couldn't possibly comment' that people're often charmed by him anyway. ] Trust is terribly fickle, sometimes.

[ If this man's not a politician, he ought to be. Gansey draws out the smile he keeps for his mother's Congressional colleagues, and makes himself relaxed. ]

You aren't slow to get started, anyway. Are you an experienced town planner? You sound pleased with the role.

<small.[Malcolm eyes the young man with a thoughtful expression on his face. He is anything but pleased with his role having realized he is sitting on a town primed to explode emotionally at the very least.] I ran my own technology company for over 25 years, planning is something I do best.

[ Technology is not quite the same as town planning, Gansey thinks. It is in fact an entirely different field. He smiles, unsurprised. ]

That’s what I wondered. The job I’ve been given relates to precisely nothing that I was doing before; I was prepared to be impressed they’d placed you so accurately.

What kind of technology did you specialise in, Mr Merlyn?

Anti virus software mostly. I had quite the skill for planning and coding in my younger years.

Then this will be quite a change of pace.

I'm sorry to hear you're living somewhere you dislike, as well. There are other options, if you're truly interested. I was able to express a preference for Virginia.

[ It's not home. But it's about as close to home as he can manage, so Gansey had taken it. ]

Where is it that you are from?

A place you've never heard of...it's called Starling.

Well, you’re right. I’ve never heard of it. That can go on the same list as Heropa, Maurtia Falls, De Chima and Nonah, since I’ve not heard of them either.

I take it your Starling doesn’t exist in this world?

No it does not. At least not that I've found anyway.

Well, then in that we're quite the same, since my home doesn't, either.

What is your home like?

It’s a small town in Virginia, called Henrietta, a few hours’ drive from DC. There’s no sign at all of it here, though there is a De Chima, and my world has nothing by that name.

[ It’s a poor trade, in Gansey’s eyes. ]

Universes have their own quirks I suppose. You got out of there as soon as you could if I don't miss my guess.

[ A pause. ]

I didn't. De Chima is not Henrietta, but I'd rather stay there than in another State entirely. It's the closest I can get.

We all have to make the best of it. Just as you're doing.

Yes we do.Hopefully my job will keep me busy enough to keep me from missing home.

I can't say I have a lot of hope that I won't miss it.

I am not a man who enjoys wasting time. I get bored far too easily.

[ He tries... sometimes. ]

That's admirable too. You'll need to be able to do that a lot, there's a lot of disruption here.

So I've heard sounds like I have my work cut out for me.

Probably more so than it's really worth.

I don't know. There is worth in everything.

At least you're asking... though don't comments like that always end up sounding a little sinister when you actually say them out loud?
