A question for the masses!

[ Klarion holds one of those chalk-flavoured Valentine's Day candy hearts up to the camera, so closely that it takes up most of the screen. ]

I've always wondered, these aren't meant to resemble actual hearts, are they? They look nothing like internal organs, it's as if whoever designed them has never seen one in person!



... I suppose if you stitched two hearts together along the middle, you might get a rough approximation of the shape, but that seems a bit grisly, even for a holiday meant to celebrate a dead clergyman.

My mom said it used to represent some kind of leaf, but clammed up when I asked her why it started representing love.

Oh, they're being metaphorical? A two-hearts-as-one sort of thing? You'd think all the blood involved would put people off.

I suppose you're too young, but most would say that love sets their heart aflutter.

I think it has something to do with that, but what do I know about romance? The last woman I loved tried to kill me.

They're not supposed to look like actual human hearts. It's a shorthand symbol, that's all.

Then it's not a very good one. How they managed to connect one to the other is beyond me.

It's probably the sort of thing where the meaning changed later. Like, it was meant to call to mind something else, associated with "romance," and later on called it a heart. Human cultures aren't very straightforward about most anything.

They aren't really meant to be realistic hearts, mostly because most would find it creepy.

I suppose. People would certainly be less inclined to eat the candy if they bore too much resemblance.

Yeah. And hearts are very important during valentine's since it's supposedly what you give the person you like - metaphorically - and represent love.

So everything needs to have a heart on it. [ and better if it's a cute heart, obviously ]

I suppose that makes sense, you wouldn't be able to sculpt the veins and such properly at such a small size.

It's just supposed to represent th' heart. Since no one actually wants someone to pull out their heart an' give it as a gift. It's symbolic.
