I was told once that the worst kind of failures are those caused by things beyond our control. I happen to agree wholeheartedly - more than once I found my job as a prosecutor made more difficult by people who didn't do theirs properly.

[ Up until now he couldn't be bothered to care about it, but since he's a prosecutor again… the last thing Blackquill wants is being told that a case has to be dismissed because someone roughed up a suspect a little too much, or something. There's a small pause, and the sound of him tapping his fingers against a table can be heard. ]

How many of you who run around playing hero have any knowledge whatsoever of criminal law? Of civil rights?

[ the "thief" part catches his attention, but he doesn't say anything. He's a convict, after all. ]

How did you end up as an assistant in the first place, if I may know?

Well, I was looking for Mr. Edgeworth so he would help me catch a murderer, but I found him instead all tied up in a room, so I helped free him, and then we investigated a murder and a kidnapping together!

[That's...the short version. But Kay, he only let you tag along because he couldn't get rid of you.]

Then we found the real murderer the next day. I mean...the one I'd been looking for.

[ He sounds slightly surprised. Edgeworth is as good as a reference as it can get as far as he's concerned. ]

Ha! If he found you acceptable, I suppose I will as well.

Pertaining to what exactly? There are several types of mortal law, some even exploited on crime television shows used in re-runs when a cable network has nothing of better value to run during prime time. It's quite entertaining, I see why so many people get hooked on it.

[there's a curious hum in his voice before he continues.]

I mean those here. You can all do whatever you feel like as long as it doesn't end up in court with me.

Are you aware of how prosecuting works? Even a flawless work behind the bench can be ruined by other people's mistakes.

They started teaching us a bit in school last year...but not a lot. Why's that important in this case?

Because a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. It doesn't matter if we do a perfect job if the ones tasked with bringing criminals to justice are faulty.

In that case what do you suggest? I mean I guess you could stand on a rooftop somewhere and shout at everybody, but doesn't seem too effective.
