first shot [ video ]

[ there are a string of short, aborted videos on the network, most of which contain a blurred image of a strange blue uniform and a series of creative, mumbled expletives. when the video finally stabilises, an agitated man in his mid-thirties leans back in his chair. there are some childish drawings pinned against a whiteboard over his right shoulder but, other than that, it's hard to discern his precise location until a woman wearing brightly coloured scrubs walks past and gives him a funny look.

arms crossed over his chest and a scowl fixed upon his face that can only mean he's new here, dr. leonard mccoy is not happy with his current situation. prime directive be damned, they've dropped him back into the medical equivalent of dark ages and he's going to let everyone know how he feels about this. ]

Now this damn thing has finally decided to work, the name's Leonard McCoy. I'm your new local paediatrician. It's a pleasure. [ the corner of his lips twitch in what might be considered a smile. ] Now before you start asking: I don't practice the dark arts these doctors of yours call medical treatment, I don't make house calls, and I don't do any of this mumbo-jumbo magic crap either.

[ they seem to be a bit of a sore subject for the doctor. ]

If you need any medical assistance, I suggest you ask for me specifically, unless you want holes drilled in your head. God help me, I'll be here all day.

Spock leans forward in the vidfeed, but he doesn't seem to type anything, merely touching something just offscreen. He doesn't fully trust the settings on these government-issued comms so he utilizes his own power to install, upload, and implement his own security settings, all within about two seconds. ]

[ he wants to point out that a human would've said please but he's already secured their conversation, so he'll let him off for now. ]

They've given me the power to fl.. [ the word becomes stuck in his throat. he hates it this much, but struggles through it. ] ... fly.

[ Both his severe reluctance as well as the power itself is surprising, Spock's expression lightening as both eyebrows raise a few millimeters. His voice is frustratingly calm as he talks about it though. ]

As a form of levitation or do you generate forms more conducive to flying such as wings or similar structures?

[grumbling]

[ mccoy's eyes roll up toward the ceiling and remain there as spock talks. god give him strength. he doesn't even want to think about this power, let alone the other one. he doesn't even know how to explain that one. ]

[ he hasn't tried it. he'll never try it. ]

[ Spock nods at his confirmation, blatantly ignoring the eyeroll. ]

Despite your obvious distaste of the ability, Doctor, it could prove useful in emergencies.

I doubt my presence would constitute an emergency.

Rather, I spoke more in regards to rendering medical aid to any had been hurt in a different location.

Spock, I could take one of these old fashioned planes and get there faster than flying.

Only if the relative distance is conducive to boarding a plane. I was referring to more localized emergencies in which typical traffic congestion would potentially block incoming aid.

Given the rudimentary technology of this reality, I presumed you would embrace such an ability.

Is the ability involuntary? Perhaps you could learn control to apply under willful choice rather than be at its mercy.
