[ When Rick Grimes was ported out, it was up to Carl to make the call. Out of everyone in the family from their world, Carl lived in this world the longest as well as being, well, Rick Grimes' son. He knows everyone should know about Rick's porting - but Carl was in such a foul mood in the last week or so he didn't even look at the network. And he didn't want to bother in calling every individual who might know Rick - Rick Grimes, despite appearances in the contrary, is a likable person, and he had a better time than Carl to really attach to others, especially as the longer he spent his time here in this world, where no dead roam and the only immediate danger is Russians and uptight supervillains.

But Carl is not the only one who has something to say. Daryl is beside him in this video broadcast. (Carl knows that he made plenty of enemies who would take delight in his exhausted state, but he's beyond caring at this point.) Carl begins. ]

This is for anyone who knew him: Dad's been Ported out. For good this time.

[ Bet some of them are glad, Carl thinks to himself grimly. ]

[[And that's when Daryl steps forward, arms crossed and fingers curled tightly into the armholes of his vest. He was very clearly upset at Rick going missing, face drawn just tight enough and eyes haunted enough, but he looked decently put together otherwise. He's as straight to the point as Carl.]]

Anyone that Rick called family, you know who you are, need you to check in. If you were Rick's family, then you're mine, too. The name's Daryl. Dixon.

He told me about a few of you, just didn't get around to the introducing. So get to it.

[[After all, the only way he could watch out for family was if he knew who the family was.

After a moment, he added:]]

Rosita, Andrea, Enid, if you see this 'fore we get to you, you know the drill. Or you should. Speak up if you got anything to say on the matter.

[[I.e. Rick's gone, that means Daryl's 'in charge' of the group (as much as anyone could be). And he was going to act like it unless someone else wanted to step up for that responsibility.]]

[ And Carl doesn't make any effort to challenge Daryl. He shrugs, and his lone eye strays from the camera, staring into the distance. ]


[ ooc: replies will come from both Daryl and Carl! Although Carl's a sourpuss at the moment so it might be a hit or miss depending on the responding tags. ]

[ he doesn't reply right away, obviously. Rick means (meant?) a lot to Sasaki, but he is terrible at dealing with loss. When he feels like he finally can say something, it ends up feeling so useless and like it won't help at all - of course it won't. ]

[Daryl suspects that this was meant for Carl, but just in case this is one of Rick's...]

[Asked with complete suspicion. Carl is with him, so if the guy isn't, Daryl have someone to say as much. At least he hoped he would.]

Sasaki touches his own chin for a second ]

I don't know. It's not something we ever talked about. [ Sasaki did see Rick asa sort of father figure, but- he never brought that up, obviously ]

[ Carl knows the general gist of what has happened to Kaneki - he lost himself somehow and became another person, into Sasaki. There's a lot of stuff in the background that Carl doesn't know and frankly he's not sure if he can really understand even if Sasaki told him otherwise.

But he remembers Dad, and knows Dad, and that's the important thing. ]

I really don't need anything. Or - well, Dad got some stuff with your name on it, I'm sure. He's always careful like that.

Listen to you. He's gone. You think it even matters anymore?

[That's sure a lot of bitter anger.]

[Daryl didn't like doing a lot of talking in public, so this is just for him, Testsuo, and Carl to hear. Since Carl's right there and all.

He could have been belligerant and equally as bitter about this. Just as angry. But Daryl had nothing to actually blame for this loss, no person to look to and he couldn't even put it on himself. So there was no steam there anymore. Just acceptance and a calm, quietly firm tone.]

It's the only thing that matters.

[ Carl's trying for a calm tone. ]

[With the recording done and over, Daryl switched it off so they could talk before response came rolling in. He dropped one of his arms to put his fingers on Carl's shoulder. A light touch. He didn't want to close in on the kid's personal space. But he wanted him to know he was there. Still there.]

Hey, that uh... that goes for you, too. If you got anything against it.

[About the chain of command. Seemed the safest topic right then.]

[ Carl leans back on his chair far enough for the front legs to rear up into the air as he stares at the ceiling. ]

I've been here the longest. Doesn't mean I make the best calls.

[ Meaning Daryl's judgement is the best judgement, as far as Carl is concerned, since he's Dad's right hand man. ]

Ah... I'm sorry. We didn't know each other that well, but we got along. He was nice. I sort of thought we'd have time to talk again...

[Daryl responds with a lot more confidence than he actually felt. The loss of any of their own was a hard blow. This more so because it was Rick, the man they usually looked to to lead them. But saying as much publicly would be showing weakness. And since she wasn't family as far as he could tell (from the way she spoke) then he'd be staying public with his responses and not dropping the act.]

[ Carl was in this godforsaken world for nearly nine months when Dad arrived. He showed up, started a new life, and disappeared, leaving Carl behind.

Being without his father is something he had to learn on his own. But now he doesn't have to be completely alone - he's got Andrea, Daryl, Rosita and Enid, and the dozen other imPorts that become family to Carl. ]

[She was one Daryl had personally added to the family even if he hadn't told anyone else in so much detail yet. So she got to see him looking at the screen with a bit more sadness to his eyes than he'd normally let on to.]

Carl said he's been gone before for a couple weeks, but this time... He's been gone too long.

He's been gone before. This time it's longer. But he's not coming back. Not for a long while, anyway.

[She leaves the offer open-ended, feeling a little uncomfortable, like she's at a wake for a friend of a friend.]

[The reason why Enid does not reply quickly is not just that she doesn't particularly pay attention to the network, but also because a part of her thinks that it sucks when people are gone and is afraid to think about it. But knowing that she can't put it out of her head anymore after seeing this, she replies. Eventually. With the shake of her head right off the bat.]

No. I have nothing to say... [except for just one thing, after a moment's pause, actually:] Sorry he's gone.

[ And he's not saying it to pass along the conversation - the hole Dad leaves behind is so great, he doesn't think it can be filled. ]

[Family gets video for this. But Daryl didn't have much else to say, either. Rick wasn't dead, but he was gone. And in this world it amounted to about the same as far as moving on with their lives went. And all of them knew that drill pretty damn well.]

That lawyer I been talking to wants me to go with him to a meeting on the 7th. Trying to make the contract negotiations final. You wanna come?

[ Family isn't anything Rose understands personally, unfortunately. But she can understand that it means a helluva lot to others. To have your father ported out... That's rough, buddy. ]

[It took Daryl a second to place the face, but then he remembered her as being the overly enthusiastic girl from the Swear-In a couple months back. Why she was worried about him when she barely knew him he wasn't sure, but it caused him to stare at the screen for a bit and scrunch his brows in thought before he finally responded. In text. Both because he preferred text and because she wasn't part of the group.]

I'll be fine. Ain't seen you around.
