I would be happy if you'd do me the honor of answering a few questions.

First, I would have it known how a doctor sets about establishing their license to practice. Is it the case that such legality is established upon entrance to this world? I highly doubt any sane medical council would permit an unlicensed physician to remain in post, as negligence is surely as endemic in this world as anywhere else. Pertinently, what funding is available for research fellowships, or starting one's own practice?

Second, might those of you with an appreciation of medical science be willing to permit me to make an account of your state of health? A physical examination with all that's entailed. Were I so fortunate as to receive your participation in medical screening, I dare say that it would assist the future treatment of everyone.

Please do me the honor of withholding your response if it fails to address either point in question. You have my gratitude, in any case.

Oh. A legislative assembly. What must be your motivations for such a move? Although, I believe, I would rather know if you decided to stand alone or were given invitation or encouragement...

Nobody really needs to encourage me to do anything. Especially when it comes to politics.

If you must know, I want to help make the world a better place. I know that sounds cliched, but... I've done the superhero gig and it didn't get anywhere, but politics? Politics I can do.

Any soul can lend itself to politics. I need not describe some of those irreparable, evil men that present themselves with one face to the world, whilst they hide their actual bitterness and greed. I confess that I have heard plenty of their words - rather, I would have you explain what you would actually do.

So much more can be done than the arrangements presently laid out for us, don't you agree?

Well right now? It's a lot of talking about what I want to do, and shining a light on my record.

I was an ambassador for imports, you know, back in De Chima up until recently. I feel like we should get a fair shot at things, but also that we shouldn't be treated specially. That's difficult, since we do have powers, so that makes us special -- but dangerous. I've been a strong proponent of using money to make the problem fix itself -- tax incentives does pretty well, so more businesses are now willing to invest or do business with imports, whether privately or thought contracts.

I want to do more for that in places other than just De Chima, I want to help us feel free to go where we need to go, and be who we need to be, you know?

Quite so. You are determined; an admirable goal in any man. In spite of the intense difficulties involved in deciding such action, I feel yours is an admirable goal that is more than welcome.

Still, could not that same work be accomplished by other means than political machinations? If you seek to banish disease, you cannot merely speak about it. Work must be done.

[ A bitter laugh. ] It's all action. I've tried other methods, but nothing works as well, honestly. I've tried everything I can to move the gears, but bureaucracy only moves properly when you're guiding its hand. So I decided that the best method to work in our interests is to work the system itself.

I understand them, at the very least. I'd rather make changes in a way I can, instead of fucking around and making something worse.

Absolutely - and I do not think politics is all talking, as you phrase it. But I do think that there are those who believe that is what it is. Those who have so greedily imbibed of the public purse whilst talking of all the good they will do; and yet they speak nonsense and do nothing.

I will not attempt to go into detail, but my beloved country suffered poorly on the injustice of political decisions. The injustice was very flagrant, and fully repaid.

But here the system is different. Is it not true that as a stranger - imPort - you will never be a part of it?

Ah, sorry it worked out like that for you. We're... I like to think we're better than that.

But I don't think it keeps me from being accepted. I was the only person with superpowers back home, and... I like to think I did pretty good for myself, all things considered.

You think it's bad here, try being a minority of one.

You will forgive me entirely if I say I cannot? It gives me no pleasure to say that your experience puzzles me, somewhat; for those powers you speak of are not the contrary back home. Would you believe that they are even tied to one's profession?

Just because they didn't help me make my job easier doesn't mean there wasn't an impact at all on my job. I used to... I was very public with my powers, at first. Everyone knew I had them -- I used that notoriety for name recognition, so I could run for office.

But people remember that. Just like they remember shit like what you said in college, or shit that you did back thirty years ago. It's always there, ready to come out to the public again, with just the right push.

The prospect of which troubles you. But where do you now exist? I would think it gives you the greatest pleasure to live where nobody knows the actions you took.

I don't think that even really...has any bearing.

Back home, I saved my hometown, in the end. It was...important, but... here? I like it here too, but I won't complain when I go home. I have things to do there too.

Most people do, I imagine. You and I and almost everyone else would have been engaged in work back home. At least that's one thing we have in common.

Well, ah, thankfully...the work can... wait here? I mean, time stops back home, so what we were in the middle of will be waiting when we get back.

Yes, so I've heard. But I would welcome clarity on my return all the same. That is I mean to suggest that we work to remember the knowledge we cultivate here. Although that is not possible at this present moment. I would certainly have a use for it; and I hardly want my time here to be wasted. Otherwise what, pray tell, is the point of being here at all?

Some people feel that way. [ A pause. ]

Sometimes I do too. Sometimes... I think of it like a vacation. This is... most of our worlds are pretty chaotic. A break -- even an extended one -- is pretty nice.

When I reflect on all the chaos here, my imagination pictures it as anything but a holiday. But perhaps the people I will mingle with here will balance that horror against some wonderful discoveries.
