[Laurel had debated a few times how she was going to put her idea forward. More specifically, how she would communicate. Using text seemed a little informal and people may not be able to detect the tone of what she was trying to convey. Using audio meant that no one would see who she was or be able to read her body language. In the end, she decided to go for the visual approach and use video.]

Hi. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Laurel Lance. Before I came here, I practiced law. Recently, I have been thinking about that part of my life and how much I enjoyed the work I did. I think I want to do something with it here.

[She smiles, letting her words hold for a moment before continuing.]

Now setting up my own office isn't possible right now, I don't have the funds. But I can offer advice and representation to people who need it and are unable to afford the normal costs of a lawyer. Currently, I can only do this part time as I already have a job. If things go well, then I'll consider taking on more.

[Practicing law in any capacity here meant that she had to be registered, Laurel understood that. Maybe this will finally help to make up her mind.]

I'm good! I have nearly the full range of motion back in my arm and shoulder.

[ To demonstrate, she raises her previously injured arm, stopping at 30 degrees or so from fully upright. ]

Which is amazing, given how long it would take an injury like this to heal back home.

That is amazing. How did you manage to heal so quickly? Did you find someone with healing abilities?

I'm sorry, but do you know me from somewhere?

I worked with a Laurel Lance where I come from. Judging from your response, though, you don't seem to know me.

You're right, I don't know you. I'm guessing it has something to do with different universes: there's another version of me where you're from.

Is she a lawyer too?

Not quite. Florist, actually. Fond of birds.

[There's a pause.]

Either way, I'm sure you're right about that. Laurel was her middle name.

Funny that. I work in a flower shop here.

[Did the government know something she didn't?]

And technically, Dinah is my first name - after my mom. I just go by Laurel.

That's generous of you. Do you have an area of specialty? Not that I need a lawyer right now, but it's good to know these things ahead of time.

Criminal law mostly. I have an understanding of other parts of the law though - and I'm not opposed to learning about the law here if I need to.

How are things with you?

Oh, much better. Out of the hospital, stitches removed. Now I just have to decide whether I dare wear a two-piece for my job. It's a nice problem to have.

Thank god. I'm glad that you seem to be on the mend. As for deciding on what to wear, I think you should go for whatever makes you comfortable. But from what I can tell about you so far, you're not lacking in confidence.

You kinda have to be in my line of work. But it's not always as easy as it seems. 'Fake it til you make it' is definitely a real thing.

[Her appetite for reading is pretty voracious, so she's run into related texts at some point or another. But justice in her home world was less formalized, and common people seldom had access to advocacy of this type, so she's pretty fascinated by the thought.]

Was the legal system you're used to practicing in back in your home very similar to the one in place here?

[It's not a question that Laurel expected to be asked, but it did raise an important point. She'll have to look into the system a bit more.]

From what I can gather so far, it seems pretty similar. But I think it would be a good idea for me to do some research and information seeking before doing anything else.

The libraries here are a pretty good resource! Though I'm not sure how much they have in the way of legal books...

[Also?! Did you know there's this magical thing called the internet that has all kinds of information? It still kind of blows her mind, but Laurel looks like someone who would probably already know all about that...]

Do you have a particular interest in the law yourself?

Ah...maybe in a roundabout sort of way? I've had to do a lot of reading on politics and history in the past, and the law is pretty important when it comes to ruling a country... [Or an empire.]

So my cousin and I have done a lot of study on this at home, though now that I'm here, it seems to be applied differently almost everywhere.

Yeah, I suppose the way the law is interpreted could account for that. It may also depend on how people might view the law, how it holds up against their own beliefs and customs in their world. [A shrug.] I'm just speculating.

Ah, my cousin does, I suppose? Not by himself, but... [Though whether the Council counted as a help or a hindrance was really up in the air definitely a hindrance...]

I was in line for the throne, back home, but that's no longer the case.
