My understanding is that this jolly fellow in red with his magic flying sleigh and reindeer is actually based on the legends of a man named St. Nicholas known as Sinter Klaas among the Dutch, which was shortened from Sint Nikolaas. Sounds conveniently like Santa Claus. He then became mythologized into the jolly elf who travels the world over in one night with his naught and nice list, delivering presents to all good girls and boys.

For parents, Santa Claus is a tool that they use to coerce their children into behaving.
