I've heard it started with the cold war between America and Russia.

I've been reading about it.

After World War II, Russia and NATO didn't trust each other. That resulted in a standoff and arms race between Russia and America. I don't know what happened in my world, but in this one the situation escalated.

You know, it might have been easier to visit your local library than to expect you would be given an exhaustive history lesson from a community of people who aren't native to the world where said war developed.

Well, that's an important distinction, and a question with a much easier answer. We aren't at war. They are.

We just happen to be hosted in one of the nations involved with the war. Which inclines the other to target us on occasion. Dreadful business, that.

[There's a lot to learn around it, while some might be covered in school or whatever, Yuu's still been more focused around anything relating to vampires in some bid to find a way to help Mika. That's something he can potentially do something about. He can't change the heritage of his best friend, that Mika is part Russian himself. But he can try focus efforts elsewhere on what he can potentially achieve. To distract himself and try feel useful. Somewhat.]

He hasn't outright really voiced such concerns, mostly because he knows Mika gets paranoid enough as it is and he didn't really think twice on Mika being part Russian until....well, all of this, with Heropa and all still having such tensions with the Soviets.]

Well, I can't speak for why America doesn't like them, but most imPorts were content to ignore them until they decided to kidnap imPorts, claim they were 'confiscating' us, then invaded the Porter cities and tried to brainwash us.
