So, um... hey! I'm back. That was definitely the longest I've been ported out for, but I gotta ask: what happened while I was gone? Because I got back, and all of a sudden, like, half of the people I know are gone. Dick's gone, Tadashi's gone again, Fuu's gone, Sarissa's gone, so's my Mom...

Was this just the Porter, or what?

What the fuck? The teleporter messes with your brain as well? How have they not fixed that! We have working teleporters at home! I have them in my damn base!

If they knew how to work the Porter, you think we'd be here? Most of us wouldn't choose to stay, and the government sure wouldn't want to bring any more of us in. It's not as simple as a teleporter, I don't think - not unless your teleporters moved people through space and time too.

Well, no... but it has to be the same kind of concept, right?

[he scratches his cheek, deep in thought.]

Man, are you telling me. You have any experience with those Porters in your base? Like, d'you know how they work, or do you mostly just use 'em?

I was... workin' up to enquirin' about them. Y'know, after I was done bein' in shock. Why, you know some... secrets?

Nah, unfortunately not. And if I did, I probably wouldn't be sharing them on a network that the government has access to! But I do think that the more information we've got on how all teleporters work, the better. Being able to control it can only be good for everyone involved.

I'm half in agreement, lad. I still think some fucker would find a way to use 'em for nefarious purposes.

Okay, yeah, point - I can think of, like, twenty world-ending ways it could go super wrong.

But it's better to try and be proven wrong than it is to just wait around, even if all it does is stop people from going back home.

I am not politically well versed enough to offer an opinion on how that should go...

Is anyone? I'm pretty sure it's unprecedented. But when people's lives are on the line, you can't just not do anything about it.

Or it could all go horribly wrong, I dunno. Still seems worth the shot.

Yeah, see, I've only experienced the whole everything going wrong and getting ten times worse part, so forgive my hesitance.

You got any experience with this stuff back home?

Not much - just experience with it here. I'm not gonna, like, strongarm you into telling me what you know, or anything. I just think it'd be nice to have a choice. Even if it was only the people who're dead here.

Boy, I'm telling you all the fun stuff, huh? Still, it's better than you hear it from me before hearing it from someone - well.

This place can bring people here after they've already died. Here, they get to start life again, but... the Porter decides if or when that gets cut short. That's why I'm so big on the idea on controlling it so they won't get sent back, so they don't gotta live with that fear.

[very slow exhale.]

Yeah, fuck the laws of reality. Why not?

They're already here, aren't they? At that point, it's universe-hopping, which people I know have done.

Plus, where I'm from? People already come back from the dead. I'd rethink what laws of reality are stable and which ones aren't.

I think maybe... I'll just go with "anything can happen ever and don't try to ever assume anything."

Yeah, that sounds easier.
