004 ➳ Semi-Accidental Video

[The post was supposed to be voice only and private to Newton. But Daryl wasn't in a state of mind to be careful when he clicked the feed on and sent it live. The mistake was likely obvious to anyone watching, however, as the camera was angled in an awkward manner where Daryl could glance at the screen and see what was on it, but not so it really got a good view of anything but the tops of his knees, his face beyond them, the edge of the bed past that, and then the ceiling of his bedroom.

The ravens he'd adopted a few months ago were hopping around trying to get his attention, to get him to play, but having little luck past him slowly pulling his head to one side so his hair was tugged out of their beaks or his hand slowly petting a feathered body that got pushed up under it. He looked like he'd mentally checked out at some point and was only going through the motions.

He sounded like it, too. Voice dull and nearly emotionless. Like a part of him had broken and he'd just shut down.]

Mako left this mornin'. Early. Ain't sure if she'll be back in time for the wedding.

['Left' meaning the world and him with the port out, not the house. He figured he didn't need to be that specific though.]

Do you need anything, Daryl?

[Daryl blinks slowly, brows creasing in clear confusion for a long moment as his head lulls to the side just enough for him to see past his knees and stare at the screen. It took longer than it really should for who he was seeing and how it had happened to process. When it did, he left his head where it was and let his eyes drift back to the ravens. Jackhammer was opening his beak and putting it around Daryl's fingers. Squeezing as if to bite down, but in a gentle way. Nailgun was once more tugging at his hair. Both definitely aware something was off about Daryl right then and there.

He shook his head once, noticeable, but only just.]

No.

[ Spock had never met this man in person, but he'd seen him in the occasional network post and possibly around the various cities. The lack of emotional display was curious for any Human, though Spock had become more familiar with the nuances of such displays, recognizing that there were in fact emotions present here: some levels of sadness and despair.

He also recognizes that the video may not have intended to be a public display, but the subject of the man's post is what drives him to seek confirmation. ]

... Has Miss Mori been ported out?

[Now aware that his post hadn't gone to the one person he'd been intending it to, Daryl doesn't react with surprise or confusion. He just glances to the side to see the face of whoever was talking before letting his attention drift back to the ravens. As much of it could be on them in the state he was in. It was easier to try and divorce himself from his feelings than dwell on what had happened. The way the Drift had just snapped.]

This morning. 1:43AM.

It's a bit early to draw definitive conclusions. Give her about a week- Newton was once gone for five days, only to return with different abilities.

[Daryl's aware of that. It was why he said he wasn't sure if she'd be back in time or not. But pointing that out was more confrontational than he was mentally able to be at the moment. It was the loss of her mind entangled with his when the Drift snapped that had him the way he was. It hurt and the only way he knew to deal with that kind of pain was to push it away and go numb until he could process it.

So he just nodded, still looking pretty listless.]

Yeah. Okay.

[ That was ... oddly specific. For a Human, anyway. It's a detail that this Vulcan appreciates, honestly. Though it does beg the obvious question: ]

Were you in her presence when it occurred?

[It was his best attempt at comfort, because he's just really awful at it.

It's probably insensitive that he's marking her down as a potential data point, but it's important work]

You should know you're still invited regardless of what happens.

[That was not something he'd been expecting to hear. Well, not from Hermann. He wouldn't have been surprised to have Newt extend that offer, but he was certain Hermann would have used any excuse he could to exclude Daryl from the event if he could.

It got a bit more of a reaction out of him. He blinked a few times, rapidly, his head raised, and he looked somewhere in the middle of confused and surprised and not sure how to respond.]

...okay. Newt still want me not to wear a tie?

[Daryl's eyes had fallen on the clock as soon as he'd woken up in shock, like a bucket of ice had been tossed on him. The time was going to be engraved in his mind for a while.]

Yeah. We were sleepin'.

[Well they did invite everyone, and he's not that much of an asshole. ..Generally speaking.]

Probably, knowing him. He lives to work against me.

[ Ah. He'd not been aware of their relationship, but then Spock only knew Mako as an acquaintance anyway. Vulcans don't tend to inquire about love lives anyway.

He drops his chin slightly, offering a small nod of acknowledgment. ]

My condolences, Mr ... ?

Daryl. Dixon. Ain't no mister.

[While his tone didn't change over much, it was still more emotional than it'd been so far. A touch gruff and with a snort in the dry, humorless way.

A moment later, his brows scrunched and he tilted his head, focusing on Mako's memories for what she knew of the man and what they'd talked about. It was painful, but if the two had been planning things or working together, it would be better to deal with it now and get it out of the way instead of waiting until later.]

...you need her for anything?

Mako picked out a blue one. Dark.

[One that would look good with her dress and both meant to match her hair. She could be practical, but she did still like to coordinate for special occasions.]

It sounds lovely.

[ Daryl will only find a couple memories of this man, one of them with him being on his knees and cradling his ribs looking hurt? ]

Negative. I knew Miss Mori as a passing acquaintance, but she provided me aid during an attack several months ago.

Can pick out a different one if you want.

[Even if he weren't feeling off and out of it, he'd probably have made the offer. He wasn't good with social events.]

[What]

..We're not enforcing any sort of color scheme. You're free to wear it if you'd like of course.

Okay.

[It's not unheard of for couples to have a wedding color scheme. He'd never been to many, but even in the sticks, bridezillas were a thing that happened and wearing the wrong color did come up. And when it did, everyone in town heard about it.]

Should I bring anything?

Yeah. I remember. I picked you up, flew you back to my place. Made you tea.

[His wings spread out as he landed... no, not his wings, her wings... She'd been the one there, not him... it was her memory he was in.

He blinked and shook his head, then corrected himself.]

Her place. She picked you up.

You're not obliged by any means, but if you do decide to bring anything, we'd appreciate any sort of housewarming gift.

[Newt's the one that decided they wouldn't ask for gifts, but Hermann's set up a wedding registry anyway. They're moving into their house once they get back from their honeymoon and it needs things okay. Mainly lots of science books bc library]

[He already got them a blender for New Years/the elopment, but he supposed something else was in order for the actual wedding.]

Can bring you some rabbits. A duck if that's better.

[Might have to skin them yourselves, though.]

[If not for the whole tone of this post, he'd think he was trolling. Of course, he still doesn't think he's offering them as food.]

We don't need anymore pets, but thank you.

...pets?

[This time he both looked and sounded confused. The odd suggestion that they'd be keeping dead game as pets has jarred him out of his fuck for a moment, but not quite to the point that he's able to register what Hermann thought he was offering right out the gate. It took some time for the gears to turn before shook his head and lifted his chin.]

Nah. For a nice dinner or two.

[ Spock frowns at the obvious dissonance in the phrasing, genuinely curious now. ]

Pardon me, but did you and Miss Mori share some ... telepathic link or other such connection?
