004 ➳ Semi-Accidental Video

[The post was supposed to be voice only and private to Newton. But Daryl wasn't in a state of mind to be careful when he clicked the feed on and sent it live. The mistake was likely obvious to anyone watching, however, as the camera was angled in an awkward manner where Daryl could glance at the screen and see what was on it, but not so it really got a good view of anything but the tops of his knees, his face beyond them, the edge of the bed past that, and then the ceiling of his bedroom.

The ravens he'd adopted a few months ago were hopping around trying to get his attention, to get him to play, but having little luck past him slowly pulling his head to one side so his hair was tugged out of their beaks or his hand slowly petting a feathered body that got pushed up under it. He looked like he'd mentally checked out at some point and was only going through the motions.

He sounded like it, too. Voice dull and nearly emotionless. Like a part of him had broken and he'd just shut down.]

Mako left this mornin'. Early. Ain't sure if she'll be back in time for the wedding.

['Left' meaning the world and him with the port out, not the house. He figured he didn't need to be that specific though.]

[Daryl blinks slowly, brows creasing in clear confusion for a long moment as his head lulls to the side just enough for him to see past his knees and stare at the screen. It took longer than it really should for who he was seeing and how it had happened to process. When it did, he left his head where it was and let his eyes drift back to the ravens. Jackhammer was opening his beak and putting it around Daryl's fingers. Squeezing as if to bite down, but in a gentle way. Nailgun was once more tugging at his hair. Both definitely aware something was off about Daryl right then and there.

He shook his head once, noticeable, but only just.]

No.

Are you sure? [ he doesn't look okay at all, and kaneki knows how awful it is to deal with loss. ]

[ Spock had never met this man in person, but he'd seen him in the occasional network post and possibly around the various cities. The lack of emotional display was curious for any Human, though Spock had become more familiar with the nuances of such displays, recognizing that there were in fact emotions present here: some levels of sadness and despair.

He also recognizes that the video may not have intended to be a public display, but the subject of the man's post is what drives him to seek confirmation. ]

[Now aware that his post hadn't gone to the one person he'd been intending it to, Daryl doesn't react with surprise or confusion. He just glances to the side to see the face of whoever was talking before letting his attention drift back to the ravens. As much of it could be on them in the state he was in. It was easier to try and divorce himself from his feelings than dwell on what had happened. The way the Drift had just snapped.]

This morning. 1:43AM.

It's a bit early to draw definitive conclusions. Give her about a week- Newton was once gone for five days, only to return with different abilities.

[Daryl's aware of that. It was why he said he wasn't sure if she'd be back in time or not. But pointing that out was more confrontational than he was mentally able to be at the moment. It was the loss of her mind entangled with his when the Drift snapped that had him the way he was. It hurt and the only way he knew to deal with that kind of pain was to push it away and go numb until he could process it.

So he just nodded, still looking pretty listless.]

[Despite their relationship, he finds himself more sympathetic to Daryl than if it had been the reverse...if it had been Daryl gone and Mako devastated. It's one of Newt's own worst nightmares, losing his Drift partner.]

Oh man... I am...I'm sorry, man. Don't ...don't even think about the wedding right now. Not important. Seriously. Not the thing you need to worry about, though like Hermann said, you and the kids are still very much invited if you even want to come. If you're up for it.

[To the booze, mostly. He didn't really need anyone to come over. Dealt with things better when he had space to keep to himself. But booze sounded good.

His tone remained that dull, in-a-daze monotone despite the agreement.]

[ There are so many ways Julian can be cruel about this, to use it to wedge into Daryl's cracks.

But he had legitimately liked the birthday presents. And he can... relate a bit. ]

The Porter is always cruel when she takes someone away.

[Daryl doesn't know if Julian's there to gloat or try to needle him, but at the moment he didn't sound like he was there to do either, so when he responded it, it was with the information Day had asked for a while back.]

[she sees how he is checked out and honestly feels a bit numb to the news herself (Mako counts as another loss she never really saw coming), so she responds via text for both their sake.]

[If he was feeling up to more than being passively active, he might have followed her response with a text of his own. But as it was, it was just easier to reply aloud than take the effort to write. He did have to pick up the stupid phone of course, but sropping it into his lap where he could read her responses didn't require much effort at all.]

[Probably. But if he did, he didn't know what it was. And anyway, he was used to shutting down and letting himself work through things over a few days. Even if it wasn't exactly healthy.]

[ Carl knows better than anyone the pain of the Porter. He still feel it, long after Dad was Ported out. The feeling never goes away, not really. It's nothing like dying, where the person is gone, they are gone, but it's a natural departure. Being Ported away - it's not natural. And what Daryl is facing is not like with Dad: at last Dad is away in a world Carl knows he's safe there. Mako is not from their world. Daryl and Mako are always going to be separated, one way or another. ]

I'll be over at the house after classes are done.

[Daryl wasn't optimistic enough to respond with 'she could come back'. Even though it was true, he just wasn't feeling like it was possible. The loss of her presence inside his head was a bit too raw and he was already having trouble dealing with that. Much less pining for something that was never a given in this place.]
