It's weird to think that maybe this Earth could turn out like the one from my universe. Or timeline. Or however it works...
(I'm not really smart about all this, I'm sorry...)

But there's a lot that's similar. Even on the planet I lived on, and all the ones in the galaxy, we all use the same clock system, even though some days are longer or shorter depending on which planet you landed on. Same 24 hour clock. And this Earth uses one, too. And there's baseball and hovercars and the moon landing was about the same time (I think)...

So I wonder how long it will take for this Earth to leave the planet, if it will. Or maybe it won't because it won't make the same mistakes the Earth in my history did. Or maybe they WILL but they'll decide to do something differently. Maybe because people like us are here it's already changed how things will go. Maybe because I'm here the railways from my world can show, and maybe because someone else is here, something from their history will happen? IS that already happening?

It's also weird that I can think about all this without trying when I'm TRYING to study something else...

Really? Even with the technology to warp people across time and space...We don't have that where I'm from and we've already colonized several planets. Maybe it's because the priorities are different here.

I don't think that the humans here built that porter - or if they did, someone else gave them the plans. It's too advanced compared to everything else here.

It seems like it. But it's hard to know for sure...
There used to be a lot more people here who dealt with that kind of technology on some other Earth, but from what I can tell, a whole bunch of them are gone.

Yeah, it happens. No one stays here for very long.

We had a similar kind of thing back in my world, but it couldn't move through dimensions yet. It's kind of why I don't think the humans here built theirs.

You think there's a version of your kind here with the ability to make that stuff?

If there were gems in this universe, everyone would know they existed already.

[there had never been a small presence - not in the galaxy and definitely not on earth. Lapis can't imagine any version of her race that would simply gift the backwards people of this planet with their technology and then depart peacefully.]

But it's not like warp pads were that complicated. It wouldn't surprise me if some other species could build them too.

Maybe. But if other worlds have visited here since I've been missing, everyone's been pretty quiet about it...

Why does it have to be after we showed up? It was probably before all this started.

I mean, it doesn't HAVE to be...I really can't be sure one way or the other myself.

I don't think anyone can until they let someone look at the Porter. But it makes more sense that way.

That still confuses me. For all the trouble that's come and gone, there's not been much collaboration to figure that Porter stuff out together, huh...

Why would they want to? They can't pretend that they're in control that way.

That can't go on forever, the way things have been.

It can go on as long as they want, if no one ever figures out how to disable the nanites.

Well thank goodness there's some smarter people than me here...

What makes you say that? No one's done anything the whole time I've been here.

That doesn't mean things can't change, though. Change seems to be the bigger deal here...

Nothing ever changes on earth.

What? Things change all the time...and that's not just the weather either.

Not in any way that matters. The big things always stay exactly the same.

I don't know about that...
But it's hard to say for sure. In any case, that's incentive for me to work a little harder to make things better.

What are you going to do?

Well, I'm hoping to be able to join the law enforcement here, to help and understand how that works inside and out. It's not huge, but it is something I can do.

That doesn't really sound like something that's going to be useful to anyone but the government.

[siriusly]

And whoever needs my help. I'll do what I can do from here, for both ImPorts and natural-born citizens. I know I can't shake anything up dramatically, even if I tried, but I can at least help build something better.
