[The Major isn't wearing her usual provocative attire today, but rather the khaki dress uniform of a JSDF officer.]

Today is Memorial Day in the United States, ostensibly a day to honor those who died during military service, though it seems to mostly be an excuse for cookouts. I didn't serve in the American army, but I did fight alongside plenty of American soldiers during World War IV, many of whom didn't survive.

How many others here have been in the military? Whether it's the American armed forces or a military that doesn't even exist here, I'm sure we've all lost comrades. I'm going to visit some of the cemeteries around Maurtia Falls and put flowers on the graves of soldiers who may not have surviving families. Maybe you'd like to join me, or do the same in your city of choice.

Certainly makes sense, for those who need or want to believe.

What do you think happens to the soul after we die? Does it just .. evaporate? Change form? [Jyn takes one of her own flowers and arranges it towards the edge of the grave closest to her.]

I don't think anyone can conclusively answer that question until they experience it. [She smiles very slightly.] And I'm not ready to find out just yet.

I'd died before I wound up here. But - I don't remember anything, if there was anything. Sort've been going under the assumption of vaporization in one universe and recoagulation in another.

That seems to be a relatively common experience among people who've shown up here. Maybe death is just a journey into a new stage of existence. [She shrugs slightly and places her flower arrangement in front of the tombstone.]

I've had a few near-death experiences, but nothing on that level. I was in a coma and floated between life and death when I was a kid, but I don't remember anything about it now. My life as I know it now didn't really begin until I woke up.

A coma? How old were you? [Jyn's tone is cautious, a non-verbal of way of saying the Major need not answer any question she'd rather not.]

[She just shrugs slightly. She's never been the most open person in the world, but the general outline of her past has never been much of a secret among her acquaintances.]

About six. It's difficult to say exactly; I don't remember much of anything before waking up.

Mm. For all that happened while I was a child, I don't think anything like that ever happened.
