I guess here's a question for the long-timers here, if you're up to killing some time...

Whatever job you had back home, one that you loved and really believed in...but doesn't work or can't happen here...if you had that, what are you doing now? Did you find something similar? Or did you discover something new you love just as much...or more?

I'd think it would be hard to get too attached, considering the circumstances...

Did something similar for a while, then went back to the bait shop they gave me when I first arrived. Now I'm retired but I'm still quite attached to the shop.

I mean...I guess if you went to the trouble of getting one, you must like it enough, right? Was it a lot of work?

Three years.
Sure was. I knew the product but not much about business. It's still open. Hook Line & Tinker in Heropa if you ever need fishing gear. ImPorts get their first t shirt free too.

So it's kind of a labor of love? That sounds nice... I'm glad to hear you have something of your own to hold onto here.

If I didn't, I might not stay here and here's all I have.

[Kind of. He still does some crime, but it's usually more one-off stuff compared to what he does at home.]

And I'm not very attached to it, no. No sense in starting something big in a place like this.

I used to work for a government branch back home. Sort of like public safety, but of course it doesn't exist here. So I was a policeman for a while and while I did enjoy it, I wasn't taken very seriously.

And then I quit and became a coffee shop owner.

Wait really?
Can you tell me more about that? The police stuff I mean. I've been following the same train of thought as you did...
Why didn't they take you seriously??

Because it was a job given to me by the government, and not something I trained for in this world. While I had the training from my world, they didn't accept it as the same. So I was often left with tasks like helping the tourists, old ladies crossing the street, making sure school were safe, but not ever something more serious than that.

I can't blame them for it.

So they more or less just dumped busywork on you to free up the already trained professionals...
The ones born and trained here I mean.

I mean if there was a perfect solution then I'm sure smarter guys than us would've found it by now right?
I'm going to find a way to help better this time. And I hope I stick around long enough to at least make some good come of me being here.

I was briefly a professor at home, but left the school and worked as a freelancing inventor for most of my life. It just barely paid the bills, but it was all I could manage while working on other projects. Here, I was initially a disco DJ, went back to freelancing, and I'm now a teacher once more.

Of everything I've done, I enjoy teaching the most, so I'm quite satisfied.

The way that reads, it's almost like teaching's just been in your destiny haha...
Do you think there's anything to that? Being MEANT to do something...

I believe we tend to be pulled in certain directions, but I also believe fate isn't set in stone. We have the power to choose our paths.

I merely chose what I enjoyed most.

Why do you ask?

Just trying to figure out that path I guess...I'm usually pretty sure about it even when it doesn't seem like a smart idea though.

Well, I used to be a surgical resident, but it turns out most programs here don't want to let in imPorts, so I got a job as an autopsy technician. It keeps me in the hospital, practicing with some of the same tools, and I get to help families find some closure. But other than that, it pretty much sucks.

They really don't want you to work as a surgeon...?
What if you had a chance to test into the job? Prove by their standards that you can do it...

I don't really blame them, one of me powers used to be really destructive, and another one could still be dangerous. They have to think of every scenario when you're going to have your hands in someone's organs.

So even if you had the chance to test in, it would be too dangerous to even try?
