It seems that having small, sentient companions is rather common here on Earth. Can someone explain why so many people seem to want and/or have them? Especially when they are incredibly small and seem to serve no purpose in terms of protection or strength?

It seems this "cute" reasoning has come up from a number of repliers. Why is that a good enough reason?

I can understand companionship and socialization, or even resourcefulness, but - fun?

People like to have cute things around them.

But yes, animals can be a lot of fun. You can pet them, play with them, and they can be pretty amusing on their own as well.

Hmm. Perhaps there's something to it, then. Having a pet.

You could always go to an animal shelter and see how it is.

There is one in each city.

And yes, you can. They'll try to get you to adopt a dog, I'm certain.

I won't be adopting anything just yet, but it wouldn't hurt to investigate a bit more.

What happens if I find one me and my house mates enjoy? Do we just .. take it home?

Animals might have owners; they can get lost after all. if you find one, you can go to a veterinarian so they'll try to find the animal's ID. if there isn't one, you can probably just take it home, yes, or take it to the shelter.

Actually, my world is very similar to this one, so things like this work the same way.

I think so as well.

But at least the natives are sympathetic about it and will explain if you have questions or don't understand something. [ well, try to ]

Yes, that's true. I've always been the sort of person who had to learn for herself, which isn't always the best approach.

I like that approach better, if I’m being honest. But you are right, sometimes it’s necessary to rely on some outside help.

I do, too, except when it's the only option I'm given.
