As Halloween is coming up, I thought it wise to make an announcement. [Sabriel's tone is deadly serious, like she might be announcing that some terrible crime has been committed, or more zombies have appeared.]

I know many of you are celebrating Halloween, and given the nature of the holiday and the imPort tendency to cause incidents, I thought it wise to make an announcement.

The supernatural is not a toy. Especially when it comes to the Dead and spirits. Seances and ouija boards generally don't work, but the safest course of action is to not play at consorting with spirits- you never know when one will get loose. [Sabriel frowns, then presses on, her tone deadly serious.]

So as Abhorsen and commander of RISE, I'd just like to remind everyone not to tamper with forces beyond their understanding or control.

[And then she smiles brightly, her tone suddenly brighter]

Have a wonderful time wearing costumes and eating candy. Just try to stay safe.

I'd rather be on the safe side. Especially after that mess with my clone, when people didn't realize raising the dead was unwise until they started attacking people.

That's what tipped them over? How did they look, these dead of yours? Dead, I assume.

Fresh corpses often seem less frightening. The fact that they retained their living personalities for a time also played a part.

Then this 'Halloween' is a celebration of all the dead, or only those who have recently died? Say in one's own family.

It's a tradition that's shifted over time- from what I can tell- but one form of it is celebrating deceased ancestors and family members, yes.

Ouija- it's a silly toy. Supposedly it lets you talk with spirits, but it doesn't work.

It's an old title, actually- from my world. We're tasked with dealing with the Dead and those who would use dangerous magic.

[She gives him a little wave, apparently unbothered by the sudden appearance of a spirit.]

But you're not a naturally occurring ghost, are you? You're an imported ghost. That's quite different!

Well, I've spoken with a few, but the boundaries between Life and Death are firmer here than in the Old Kingdom.

A few members of our little community, yes, but no local ghosts. It's very odd. I've wondered if this world is deficient in some way.

[As a spirit, he wants to understand what kind of rules she's laying down here.]

Serving them, or using them as servants. The dead are mean to pass on, not linger in this world.

Although in the case of imPorts, that's not exactly possible.

An unconventional Halloween PSA, to say the least. People typically need reminders about children, pets and suspicious-looking treats sooner than they need warnings about spirits or ghosts.

Tell me, is communicating with the dead a popular pastime among imPorts? I haven't heard of such things since arriving here. But I admit it would hardly be the strangest thing anyone's told me.

Well, as far as I can tell all the reports about poisoned candy are nonsense.

And it's not, but considering people's powers, it's probably best to avoid trying it.

Maybe, maybe not. [Those concerns aren't applicable for a man his age, so Klavier hasn't bothered checking.] "When in doubt, throw it out" is still a useful Halloween adage, either way.

Can't blame you for being on the safe side, though. As commander of RISE, you've probably had to clean up other people's messes before. How long have you been working in your position?
