Flat Robotic Voice: (ala speech-to-text) Do Jedi protect people or would you let innocent people get hurt for some idea of "greater good"?

Kanan Jarrus: Protecting innocents is the greater good. That's what we're called to do, as Jedi. The Force has granted us these gifts, these abilities. In my world, Force-sensitives can do things other people can't. And so it's our job to protect those who can't protect themselves.

Robotic Voice: Anti-Jedi. Would you protect people with your life, or would you let them die for some "greater good"?

General Grievous: It is not my duty to protect the people of Earth yet you will condemn me for not sacrificing myself for just any cause.

[ It makes Kanan wonder, though. ]

We found an old Jedi Temple on Lothal, Ezra and I. We... well, you know how things can be in those places. I spoke to Yoda once there, and so did Ezra, on another occasion. I guess I had assumed it was a manifestation of him in the Force, but maybe it was... really him? I don't know.

It’s entirely possible. Some of his ways are a bit of a mystery, even to me. After the things I have learned I would not doubt it.

[Because who can ever possibly fully understand Yoda?]

Understatement. [ He chuckles faintly. ]

But... either way, I'm glad. To know there are others. [ It really, really sucks to think you might be the only survivor. ]

As am I. With how we needed to hide, it makes finding other Jedi in the galaxy nearly impossible.

Yeah. There had been times when I'd hoped to find someone - anyone. Once, we thought maybe Master Luminara was still alive, but it turned out to be a trap.

I understand. Despite the lack of Jedi though, the Force has granted you a Padawan and companions. You are truly blessed my friend, despite the difficult times.

[Something that he hopes Kanan never takes for granted.]

I know.

[ Don't you worry, Master Kenobi, he will never take it for granted. ]

I lost a family, but the Force led me to a new one. I couldn't have asked for a better.

[ Ezra, Hera - all of them. He loves them. ]

And for that I am happy for you.

[Kanan deserved that much after everything he had been through at such a young age.]

It is in our darkest moments that we can find the greatest light.

When I was blinded - I would've been lost without them.

[There was a moment of silence, and then Obi-Wan switched it to private.]

It was a lightsaber, wasn't it?

[He had seen Kanan's face in one of his network posts. It... wasn't a hard conclusion to make.]

[ He's not sure what he was expecting. He's shown the scarring publicly on the network, after all, and Kenobi certainly knows a lightsaber wound when he sees one. No doubt he's curious. ]

Yes. There might not be many Jedi left but that doesn't stop the Empire from making use of Dark Side Force users. And there are... others.

[ Actors not affiliated with anyone but themselves. Maul. ]

I see. I had thought only the Emperor... and Vader.

[He goes quiet at the end there. You're not the only one who had things he doesn't like to talk about Kanan, and he will respect that. He doesn't know anything about Inquisitors, and didn't think it likely that the Emperor would widely use a lightsaber. So he's making an assumption there that it was the person he last mentioned.]

Forgive me for asking. You don't have to speak of it.

[An invitation to leave it there if he so wishes.]

[ Kanan shakes his head. ]

It's fine. There's a group, they call themselves Inquisitors. I think they work for Vader. They track suspected Jedi, and even Force-sensitive children. We've had to deal with a few of them.

But it wasn't an Inquisitor, or even Vader, who did this. [ Who blinded him. ]

It was Maul.

[Is it really fine though? There was a small noise of disgust at the mention of a group going after force-sensitive children. Then a small amount of relief hearing it wasn't Vader... which was then quickly dashed by what Kanan said next. Obi-Wan's thoughts coming to a screeching hault.]

I beg your pardon?

[Give him a minute to reboot here.]

He's still alive?

Yes, more's the pity. Or, well, he was for a while. I'm pretty sure he was finally dead when I - left.

[One can only hope really. Obi-Wan shook his head to himself. Hardly able to believe that Maul had reared his head yet again.]

[Yes, that was an apology. A loaded one at that. It might not have been Anakin, but he still feels terribly guilty.]

[ Oh hell naw. ]

Nuh-uh. I've been through this with Ezra, I'm not doing it with you, too. Not your fault. Maul's actions are his own.

That may be true, but too many people have suffered and died because of my inability to finish what I started.

[In other words it's not just you Kanan. Maul has been a plague in Obi-Wan's life for some time now.]

Maybe you're right.

[ But. BUT! ]

I'm not saying it's good that he lived, I'm just saying - in my case, anyway - it was as the Force willed it. It's been difficult, but I can honestly say I'm a better Jedi now. And a better Master to my Padawan. You won't hear me thanking Maul for what he did, but - things happen for a reason.

That they do.

[Obi-Wan could agree with that. And really, he had to think of it that way as well to get past his own loses.]

At least some good came of it. I'm glad you could make your peace.

Like I said, I had a lot of help - also as the Force willed it.

[ Not just the Ghost crew, either. But also the Bendu, and meeting such a being was certainly no coincidence. At some point he does want to talk to Obi-Wan about the Bendu, but perhaps not just today. Soon, though. ]

It happened, and I had to learn to live with it - if not for myself, for the others. We're Jedi. People depend on us.

That's right. We don't live our lives for ourselves.

[Even though sometimes it could be hard to remember that. And some might judge them for thinking that way. It was the truth, their truth.]

I'm certain you have no shortage of stories to tell, Kanan. I would like to hear more of them the next time we meet.

[ Kanan's life stopped being about him a long time ago. Really, it did when Depa Billaba sacrificed herself, though it took him a while to realize it. But he's fully committed, now. ]

I've also really enjoyed our conversations so far, Master Kenobi. Drop by for dinner any time - Hera is just as eager to get to know you better.

[He can relate to that as well. That also stopped for him the moment his own master died. Losing one's master is quite a wake up call for a young Jedi. Especially when you have a child dropped in your lap for training.]
