1st SAVE | Video

[The feed opens up to the view of a young child, about eight or so years old, standing away at arm's length. The feed is slightly tilted, and there's a frown as the child reaches forward to adjust the position of the camera. When they're satisfied, they lean back to their original position and wave brightly at the camera. Hello everyone!

Frisk isn't sure where exactly this place was, but they do know it's not anywhere close to Mount Ebott or any place familiar. Being dropped into a completely foreign place with strangers isn't new to them though. It's strange seeing so many humans after a long period of having monsters as company, but they're not about to be deterred.

But back to the point. Frisk holds their left palm up and slides their right hand over it, outwards, then points their index fingers up with both hands and touches the hands together and finally points at the camera, making a sweeping motion from right to left. It's nice to meet you all.

They continue with their signing, making the hand movements a little slower than usual for clarity. They're not sure if anyone will understand them, but it's worth a shot.

It's a short statement. I'm new here, let's all be friends! Once they're done, they smile, and then end the video.]

[Aw, they're so cute! Max gives a happy little wave in return, smiling.]

Hello, there! I'm Max.

[Frisk's smile widens, and they sign back a reply. Hello Max! Can you understand my signs?]

Uh... [Max squints a little, trying hard to make it out...

But nope. She really should learn sign language.]

Sorry, I don't speak - uh, sign - this stuff very well. [She does know "I love you"?]

[There's no disappointment on Frisk's part. They expected as much. Not many knew how to read, much less actually use sign language. Frisk just pats the camera screen as if to reassure Max. It was okay, Frisk didn't mind. There's a short moment of silence, and then Frisk speaks up, voice quiet a clipped from disuse.]

Friends?

[That, Max understands - and she's always had a soft spot for kids. She nods, beaming at them.]

Friends.

[And maybe she can find some YouTube videos or something on sign language.]

[That gets the brightest smile from Frisk. They're glad it's been easy so far to make new friends! They pat themselves on the chest, speaking as they sign.]

I'm Frisk! Nice to meet you!

[Their voice is quiet and sounds very much like it hasn't been used a lot.]

[TOO MUCH CUTE. If Max grins much harder, she's pretty sure her mouth will fall off her face.]

Nice to meet you, too! Are you new here?

[Frisk nods in reply, amused by the wide grin on Max's face.]

Got here an hour ago.

[And then they point at Max. What about her?]

[Her smile fades a bit at that. Really, she was just asking in an awkward attempt to make conversation, but... they bring little kids here? What the hell?!]

Are you okay? Do you need some help?

It's been a couple of days.

[Oh. Frisk could tell Max wasn't pleased at that. They pat at the camera insistently, reassuringly.]

I'm fine! Used to it.

[Being alone in a strange new world, they mean.]

We're both new!

[Frisk takes joy from the little things.]

[What.]

Are you cereal?

[She means "serious", but far be it from Max to refrain from using dorky slang.]

I guess that means we have something in common. [She's not sure if that's a good thing or not.]

[Good thing Frisk enjoys very dumb jokes and slang. They giggle at the word usage, and nod.]

Made a lot of friends though! It was... [Give them a moment to think..] barley scary!

[They laugh again. Sans would be so proud of them.]

[Way too cute. This kid is, like, baby animal levels of cute. Max lightens up.]

Muffin you're not used to?

[She laughs with them, nodding.]

I'd like that!

[Oh no, more puns. Frisk continues to snicker, and tries to think of a reply. But they're not the best at puns, despite liking them, so they give up after drawing a blank for half a minute.]

Yep! Not good at puns, I'm sorry.

Where are you?

[Max giggles.]

If it helps, I don't think I could have come up with any more, either. [Not easily, at least.]

I'm in Heropa, at... home? I guess? [Yep. Here Max is, hanging out at home on a weekend night, because she's a loser.] Where are you?

Puns are hard. [Frisk nods sagely. Sans was really amazing.]

I'm in Heropa too! [Frisk pans the video so Max can see where they are. It's the park closest to the imPort residences. They're sitting on a bench close to the sandbox playground.]

They're also easier to come up with when it hasn't been a crazy week.

I'll come and meet you, okay? [Because like hell is she going to leave a little kid out there by themselves in an unfamiliar city.]

[Something happened? Frisk wants to ask, but decides it can wait until Max meets them in person. They nod, patting the bench beside them. They'll wait here for her.]

[Max is there in under twenty minutes, having pulled on her hoodie and watched a couple of online videos about basic sign language on the way. Once there, she waves at Frisk, signing in a clumsy, albeit well-meaning, sort of way. Did you wait long?]

[Frisk's expression brightens as Max approaches, and when she signs to them they beam in happiness before signing back slowly, and speaking quietly in translation.]

No. Was talking to people.

[They hold up their communicator and smile. Everyone was so friendly! They were happy.]

[Max watches Frisk's hands as she listens, trying her best to pick it up. Languages were never her strong suit - she can barely even pronounce "the Daguerreian process".]

Sorry. I don't know very much, yet.

[She sits down besides them, smiling at the communicator. It's nice that Frisk had people to talk to.]

[Frisk smiles and pats Max's arm.]

It's okay. You're trying.

[And Frisk gave full points for effort.]

Everyone is nice.

[They're looking at the communicator, showing Max some of the texts they've received. So far, everyone's been receptive to their sign language and making friends.]

[Max signs again to Frisk. This time, it's thank you.]

I'll keep learning, okay?

[Because really, what's a little study in comparison to making a little kid happy?]

Well, good. [Max looks over the communicator in approval. Really, though, she can't think of many folks who'd be mean to a kid.] How are things going, so far?

[Because she may be super new here as well, but she's at least kept her frizzing out to a general minimum, at least in private. She does, however, want to make sure Frisk is okay.]

[Frisk pats Max's arm again, this time in approval and encouragement.]

I'll help!

[Frisk is so glad Max is willing to learn.

They tilt their hand for a moment to go over how they're currently feeling, and then sign a good to Max.]

Everything is different. I want to explore.

[Frisk isn't scared. They're treating this more akin to a brand new adventure.]
