1st SAVE | Video

[The feed opens up to the view of a young child, about eight or so years old, standing away at arm's length. The feed is slightly tilted, and there's a frown as the child reaches forward to adjust the position of the camera. When they're satisfied, they lean back to their original position and wave brightly at the camera. Hello everyone!

Frisk isn't sure where exactly this place was, but they do know it's not anywhere close to Mount Ebott or any place familiar. Being dropped into a completely foreign place with strangers isn't new to them though. It's strange seeing so many humans after a long period of having monsters as company, but they're not about to be deterred.

But back to the point. Frisk holds their left palm up and slides their right hand over it, outwards, then points their index fingers up with both hands and touches the hands together and finally points at the camera, making a sweeping motion from right to left. It's nice to meet you all.

They continue with their signing, making the hand movements a little slower than usual for clarity. They're not sure if anyone will understand them, but it's worth a shot.

It's a short statement. I'm new here, let's all be friends! Once they're done, they smile, and then end the video.]

[Max signs again to Frisk. This time, it's thank you.]

I'll keep learning, okay?

[Because really, what's a little study in comparison to making a little kid happy?]

Well, good. [Max looks over the communicator in approval. Really, though, she can't think of many folks who'd be mean to a kid.] How are things going, so far?

[Because she may be super new here as well, but she's at least kept her frizzing out to a general minimum, at least in private. She does, however, want to make sure Frisk is okay.]

[Frisk pats Max's arm again, this time in approval and encouragement.]

I'll help!

[Frisk is so glad Max is willing to learn.

They tilt their hand for a moment to go over how they're currently feeling, and then sign a good to Max.]

Everything is different. I want to explore.

[Frisk isn't scared. They're treating this more akin to a brand new adventure.]

[Whoops, she said that without signing. But she watches Frisk, and imitates their movements. Good?]

Do you usually like exploring?

[Frisk nods, signing again, firmly. Good.]

Exploring is fun. Meet lots of new people! It's fun.

[Good! Hey, at least Max knows a new word. She looks around, taking in the sunset. Getting to know the town would be nice, but it's also going to get dark soon-ish; maybe now isn't the best time.

Still, she doesn't want to burst Frisk's bubble... and maybe there are at least a few places they can go.]

Where do you want to start?

[That's a good question. Luckily, they don't have to take the time to ponder it as a loud gurgle sounds from their stomach. They look down, and then pat their stomach, looking at Max.]

Food?

[Luckily for Max and Frisk, she'd just gotten her weekly assist money from the government - apparently part of the benefits of being here. She nods, feeling rather hungry herself.]

Where do you want to go?

[This time Frisk tilts their head in thought. They weren't a very picky eater, but since they were being given a choice...]

Burgers.

[A beat.]

Or spaghetti. Or pie.

[...maybe they missed their friends more than they thought.]

[Fortunately, she knows a pretty decent burger place, thanks to Norman. Actually, it's basically a "catch-all" eatery.]

I know a place where you can take your pick. Wanna go there?

[She stands, offering her hand to Frisk if they want to take it.]

[Frisk nods excitedly and hops off the bench. They pat themselves down and then take hold of Max's outstretched hand. It was warm and friendly. Frisk liked that.]

Let's go!

[Max smiles, suddenly feeling better about not being able to geek out over "Superheroes are REAL and the government wants me to join them" with Warren, about not being able to call her mother and hear her voice, about not getting to have Sunday tea with Kate.

And about Chloe.]

Okay.

[She holds Frisk's hand gently, unused to looking after kids (seriously she's never even so much as babysat in her life), but willing to give it a shot as she leads them towards the restaurant.]

[Thankfully for Max, Frisk would be an easy child to babysit. They're quite used to being independent, so they know how to care for themselves.

As they walk to the eatery, Frisk looks around at the city in wonder. It was so much bigger than anything Frisk was used to. They watched people walk past, in a hurry, leisurely, chatting...]

Lots of people. Heropa's so big.

Yeah, it is. Arcadia Bay's tiny compared to all this.

[Then again, Arcadia Bay is pretty tiny, period. Realizing Frisk may not get the context, Max hastily adds:]

It's where I'm from. What about you?

[Arcadia Bay is the place Max must have come from. That's what Frisk assumes at least. It sounds like a cozy place, just going by name.

Frisk ponders the answer for a moment. They had once lived in a human settlement, but after breaking the barrier, they wanted to stay with the monsters and live with them. Frisk loved the monsters a lot.]

Underground.

[So they answer as if they've been living with the monsters, even though they haven't.]

It's very small.

[Wait, what?]

Underground?

[HOW. Never mind that there are likely a lot of people from many different versions of Earth, and many more who aren't from Earth, Max's mind = blown.]

Do you... like it there?

[But what about the sunsets, Frisk?]

[They liked Underground. More specifically, the monsters who lived there. So they nod their head slowly.]

Everyone who lives there is very nice. I like them.

[IT'S OKAY MAX THEY GOT OUT THEY GET TO SEE SUNSETS AGAIN IT'S FINE]

So... who lives there?

[Socialization skill: EXPERT.]

[It's okay Max. Frisk has dealt with worse.]

Monsters!

[Like that isn't the most alarming thing in the world to say.]

[Okay. On the one hand, monsters?! On the other, Frisk seems perfectly happy about it.

So, naturally, she chooses to respond in the most mature and intelligent manner possible.]

Are you kidding?

Huh. I guess that's a good thing?

[So what, do they fight the monsters?]

[Frisk nods rapidly.]

They're really nice. Everyone is my friend.

[No fighting!!! Only MERCY.]

[Awwww!]

I can see why. You're so sweet!

[Is she allowed to say that? She hopes she's allowed to say that.]

[Frisk smiles, squeezing Max's hand in thanks.]

You're super sweet!

[A totally childish retort. Frisk is going to outdo you in the compliment-giving.]
