[Sabriel's sitting at her desk at RISE headquarters, looking like she hasn't had a decent night's sleep for a few days.] This is Sabriel of RISE

Some people seem to have had their memories tampered with. We're still working out the cause- [Okay, Gansey told her Billy did it, but exposing a small child to retaliation is appalling. Billy can deal with the consequences one he's his proper age.]- but there is a possibility it's some sort of magic.

I know we've had some new arrivals- is there anyone here with magical skill who's interested in working with me to get to the bottom of this? If it is magic, the mage responsible has most likely anchored it to some object- if we can find out where they hid it, we can probably find a way to unravel the spell.

[ Gansey isn't talking to the masses, though he's paying attention. His eyes are on Dorian in particular. He doesn't like any part of the way that conversation is going.

Sabriel had kept Billy out of it, though, and he's with Erik now. He'll be protected. That's what matters. ]

What about actually identifying the object? Is there magic that can do that, so that we know we have the right thing?

I think so. Magical artifacts aren't common here, and with a spell this powerful...

Well, it'll be hard to mistake it for anything else once we find it.

Good, that's what I'm hoping for.

[ Because it's going to need to be obvious. Searching for this thing along a ley line will be like searching for a needle in a haystack.

But how do you do that? You just need the right magnet, of course. ]

If I'm right about it being hidden along a ley line, that surge of power would probably be reflected down the length of the line, wouldn't it? That's how we would know we were on the right track.

Probably. Keep in mind, this is just a somewhat educated guess, but- the power's probably in the ley line, rather than just radiating outward. At most, it might be disguised by the ley line's own power, but in this case, that would probably be like expecting a desk fan to cover up the noise of someone shouting.

So once we find the right line, we search along it for likely spots- we'll need help.

Just not Lucifer's for the Charter's sake!

[ This concept is familiar enough to Gansey; the ley line radiating power. It reminds him of home, of Cabeswater. He thinks, with some irritation, that he's probably told Billy enough about that phenomenon for him to make use of it.

That's not a pleasant thought. Neither is Lucifer's involvement. ]

No, not Lucifer. And not Pan, we can't trust either of them not to turn this in their favor. If we're looking for something built on the ley line, that will narrow down our options somewhat. But you're right, we'll be left with a lot of ground to cover either way.

Considering Pan's already warped people's minds for his purposes, certainly not. At least Lucifer's trying to feign agreeableness- he might even actually help us, I just wouldn't count on it. And I'm not interested in either of us owing him a debt.

You don't need to convince me. Only an idiot makes a deal with the Devil. I'm not Johann Faust.

[ Gansey will absolutely work his hardest not to get on Lucifer's bad side, but that doesn't mean he wants to be up in his business. No one with any sense would want to be up in Lucifer's business. ]

Good. People might tell stories about fooling ancient, powerful entities, but such beings are too clever to deceive with any frequency.

And I'm flattered- though aside from Billy and Anastasya, I don't know how many magic users have both a knowledge that extends beyond battle magic and some amount of conscience.

Then it's clear I made the right choice. I don't know Anastasya, though.

[ He knows the name, at the very least - he knows she's an Ambassadorial candidate. Given that he knows nothing about her outside of that, the idea of going to her hadn't entered his head.

But, if Sabriel trusts her... ]

Should we be speaking to her? If she'd be willing to help, I'd have nothing against it.

Well, she's more of a necromancer than a generalist. But if it's necessary, I'll see if she can help.

[ Well, that's awkward. ]

You mean she raises the dead? And commands them?

Exactly. But not so much here. And hers seems to operates along different rules from mine, thankfully.

Well, what does that mean? I'm not even sure I know how yours works, beyond that...

That you can apparently teach anyone. I know my friend Adam's been learning from you.

I can teach one part of my world's magic to any living imPort. Necromancy draws from a different source, and I'm not stupid or cruel enough to teach it to anyone.

No. I didn’t think you would be. I don’t think that’s magic Adam would want, either.

[ Gansey trusts Adam. He might want more power, and he might miss Cabeswater, but he wouldn’t want that. ]

Or Billy. I don’t think it would help us here.

It wouldn't. Mastery over the Dead has its uses, but none of the ones here have any knowledge of magic.

Okay. Good.

[ Because honestly? Gansey doesn’t want to deal with that. He’s friendly with a ghost who was just recently possessed by a demon; someone taking command of the dead does not sit well with him. ]

Listen, I’m going to keep up with our research. If you find anyone who can help, will you tell them to meet us?

I will. Don't worry, we're going to fix this.
