I think "define" is a pretty arbitrary word.

Having my power changed and shaped who I am now. I identify myself as a user of it before anything else.
But I'm the one who dictated how the power was used and defined what it meant to me. It's neither one way or the other.

One of the "powers" I have is just the unique physiology of my race. Another is our natural magical ability. In our culture, that magical ability does indeed define one's station in life so it could be said that it does define me. Even if it's been a long time since I lived in the place I grew up, those experiences very much define me and I'm not going to be like the people of the planet I currently live on no matter how much I try to blend in. That experience actually made it easy to adjust to coming here as well.

i think this question is going to have a very different connotation to those of us who arent human
i wonder if its that the porter isnt quite calibrated to us given that shes native to earth
but barring an allowance in the "powers" granted to us she has a tendency to alter our biology to make us more familiar
if you remove those powers then we are forced to spend our time here in bodies that are alien to us

Yeah, they should. But, I can't deny that powers appear to have some tie to the people who gained them.
