Would it be dumb to try to get a car that's as close to the same make and model as my car back home, even if it's kinda old and crappy, just cause it's familiar? [and sentimental reasons but he's not getting into that here] Do other people do that? Should I be shooting for the gold standard of inexpensive but functional?

It doesn't sound dumb to me. More like nostalgic. It's okay to want a reminder of home as long as the car is safe and you like it.
