I was making preparations for some festivities next month, and I was referred to a team of designers who will bring your clothing designs to life. Their work is lovely — they had everything from formal wear to award-winning FanPort cosplay costumes!

So, I contacted them with a design of my own, in hopes of having something special to wear. Now... admittedly, I'm not much of an artist. [She holds up a piece of paper...]



But I thought it actually turned out well this time! It's certainly not lifelike, but it's a perfectly fine diagram, isn't it? At least the details are nice and clear!

Somehow, the shop mistook it for a Halloween monster costume, even though it's obviously supposed to be a gown. Perhaps someone could try redrawing it a little bit better?

Do you know how many guesses they made to figure out what that was? Someone thought it was a brain! Why would there be a brain dangling from the waist?!

I wanted to try autumn colors. You know, something with shades of gold and orange, and a few striking red accents. Especially a red bow.

[HOLY SHIT. He's trying to respond, but all she's getting is Guzma laughing. He keeps starting, and then stopping as a fit of laughter takes over again. Sure, Tupp draws terribly, and so do most of his grunts, they barely can use stencils properly, but...this?

After a few moments, he finally stops. Sorta.]

[What is obvious, however, is just how quickly Guzma's laughter is getting on her nerves. She crosses her arms.]

Are you quite finished? I know you would be making fun of it no matter how good or bad it turned out!

Really, I bet you couldn't draw something better!

You know, I really don't get their problem. I mean, it's not that hard to decipher.

I really like the lace frills at the shoulders. I think it's going to wow a lot of people.

Admittedly, I had to take a shortcut for the hair, because... well, because it never looked right, no matter what style I drew it in.

[That's the part that bothered her. The rest of this was actually pretty good. You heard it here, folks.]

But it's actually cute like that, isn't it? Being all short and poofy?

Perhaps if you'd drawn all the... parts... separately, they might have gotten less confused. Like a step by step diagram.

It might be easier for me to draw that way as well. It might not be as pretty as a full picture, [she says as if this is 'pretty' in any way] but technical diagrams are far easier for me.

Thank you! I was hoping to give it that sort of texture. Like the leaves of Earth's syrup trees. They seem to be the most distinctive for autumn!

For some reason, they thought I drew the fabric shredded, all around the collar. Can you imagine?

In fact, I stared at the paper for so long that I had to take a break before I started seeing double.

Maybe you could try drawing arrows and labeling things? In the Art Club back home, my teacher said that's what fashion designers do, so the people making the clothes know exactly what to do and what to make.

[Lain's never tried designing clothes meant to be made in real life, but she loves doodling and has drawn some sci-fi inspired dresses in her time.]

Oh, and color coding can help, too. Like, you take your sketch and make a copy, and then fill in the colors you want, so the people making it have a reference. We learned that in Art Club, too. It's what designers and animators do.

It sounds like you learned a lot from your Art Club, though. Did you spend much of your time there?

They say skill comes from practice, not talent. If I keep trying, it can only get better, can't it?

I think it might be easier for them if you break it down into the pieces and add notes along the sides. Maybe with titles like 'left arm, right arm'.

If they're having problems figuring things out that could go a long way to clarifying things without stressing either you or them out.

If you mean the sleeves, those are supposed to be embroidered! It's very hard to draw embroidery!

It's this time of year. I'm getting all kinds of requests for pumpkin and other fall flavors. I bet the designers are getting all kinds of Halloween orders. So they're going to see a costume.

I think you should look for photos of gowns similar to what you're looking for to show them and describe it in words.

You know, that isn't such a bad idea. The only downside is that none of the fashions here on Earth are quite like Altean fashion...

Maybe... I could take a picture of a nice gown, and draw the changes on top of it...? [What could possibly go wrong?]
