Lets say you've been dating someone for a year. Well, nearly a year. It's coming up -- soon, next month as a matter of fact. And you want to do something special. I don't just mean a nice dinner because we can do that any time. We have, actually.

What would you do?

Oh good question. A question I should be asking myself, actually.

ANYWAY

Does your special someone have any particular interests? Hobbies? Critters they're particularly fond of shooting?

I don't know if he has any favorite critters to shoot. I think he's more of a laser sword guy.

He likes baking? He's a pilot. Fixing things.

Nothing that really seems romantic to me.

Ah, a laser sword guy. I got a buddy who's a regular sword guy and about the most romantical thing you could do for him is get him a bigger sword. Second most romantical, first would be besting him in single combat. Not the point--point is, all the laser sword guys I've met here? Not into that, which is kinda weird? Because you've got laser swords?

But pilot? Pilot I can do somethin' with. Here's the thing about people who love flying: they love flying. Get him up in the sky. Find somethin' he's never flown before.

Seeing as I don't really know how to get him a bigger or better laser sword than the one he has already. Not sure he'd want a bigger or better one since he only uses it on occasions he needs it and he's fond of his current one.

But flying. That's not a bad idea. I think I can use some of my connections to get him up there in something he's never tried before.

It's a GREAT idea, if I do say so myself. Which I do. Because I'm so full of good ideas.

Speaking of: what about one of those giant balloons?

Humble, too.

You mean one of those ones with the hot air? You know, I don't think he's ever been in one. Brilliant.

Never had much use for humility, what with bein' super duper cool and all.

But yeah yeah those hot air ones. Not flashy or speedy but there's somethin to be said for novelty, you know?

A whole year! Well, good for you.

If you ask me — and look at that, you did! — the best way to show someone how much you care is to show them how well you understand them. What are their secret wounds, the ones only you know how to poke? Who or what might they be most devastated to lose?

Set up an evening of enchantment and violence designed to graphically illustrate one point: the only person who truly knows how to break them, to hurt them, to cherish them... is you.

How. Is hurting the one you love supposed to illustrate your feelings?

Because no one else knows them well enough to make it sting the way you do! And I mean, clearly you care, if you put in that much effort.

The true opposite of intimacy is just apathy, after all.

You know, I think there are better ways of showing someone you care than letting harm come to them.

Who said anything about 'letting' harm come to them?

No, no, friend. I'm talking about deliberately summoning harm to them! Orchestrating it, top to bottom, in a grandiose display of violence and romance that'll leave their nethers trembling.

I was thinking travel, personally.

You both like to travel? Is there some place neither of you have been yet?

There are lots of places we haven't traveled yet, neither of us are actually from this planet.

But we have talked about going on a trip together, before.

More than happy.

He's made my whole life better.

I haven't figured out yet how to tell him how much he means to me, but I think he understands.

Have you traveled anywhere together?

No, not yet. I have thought of taking a road trip with him, though. With everything that happened we never got around to it.

The apocalypse? Yeah, I can see that being a major travel concern.
Road trips are a lot of fun. So much scenery to take in, things to do and new memories to make with the other person.

I think I'm going to swing the idea of a road trip by him, right now that seems like the best option.

This is just a suggestion, but if you do road trip? Do the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Blue Ridge Parkway? I've never heard of that. What is it?
