[ There is a pause. He remembers reading something about that, but he didn't understand it at the time - the very concept of a network at all being so far from his world view that he had merely skimmed the information. But he goes to look now.

[ People often called his language poetic, though he finds the language here less capable of retaining as much meaning per word as he would prefer. ]

[ It was exhausting. But then, Wangji found communication in general to be exhausting. The mere act of connecting was labour intensive for him, and often not worth it. When one could not know the true nature of another, and was bound to be misunderstood, why go out of the way to prevent it?

His actions could speak for him.

So why exhaust yourself twice over. If the experience itself is inevitably tiring. What do you gain by it?

[ There isn't a response for a while. It's a question he finds impossible to answer, both because he can't articulate how he feels but also because he doesn't think he has to. It's a deeply personal question.

But perhaps thanks to the way that text allows for greater length of thought between utterances, he does, in fact, eventually reply. ]
