Sometimes there isn't time for any kind of break, let alone sleeping.

What's so important that you can't sleep?

I'm a detective. Criminals don't wait for cops to take a nap.

Right, but there's supposed to be at least two of you. Then you get to.... [He raises his hand, palm up and chest height. He draws it from himself, lips still parted.]

I don't have a partner.

As a detective, I'm on my own. I can call for back-up but I'm usually on my own.

Then to answer your original question, I'd say to get a partner! You can only go so far before you have a heart attack. And then who'll stop all the criminals?

So why the mad, vigilant hunt for criminals? There are other officers about, aren't there?

The question was more in general. Not for anything current or specific.

Of course there are the local police.

But you don't trust them, do you? What little trust, you can't even bear to sleep!

They probably wouldn't help us in many situations. We're on our own.

And I know there are a lot of super-powered humans and other beings here, but sometimes there are cases that just need regular detective work.
