Hello. I'm Ken Kaneki. [ maybe he shouldn't introduce himself everytime, but ah well ] I arrived last month, so last month it was my first Swear-in. It was surprising. To say the least...

But I wanted to ask about Registration. I was wondering what is the point, if it's better to register or not, and if there is anything else to it that they might not tell us. And.. yeah, that's it.

From what I understand being registered means they will pay for your bills, give you extra money, secure you your job, allow you to travel freely and also allow you to travel freely domestically and internationally.

They will also pay for school.

It seems foolish not to register.

I get that, yes. But why? I mean, what do they get in return for all of that?

I would assume so, otherwise, why would they provide? Unless it's simply a way to easily monitor us, but they should be able to monitor everyone from the beginning I would assume.

I've only been here a few months, but from what I've seen, registering makes it easier to get what we want from the government. [a pause] You don't have to do the hero thing, I don't and I'm registered.

I don't fully understand what do they have to gain offering us all of that, if all they get in return is our tattoo changing to "Registered", though. [ it sounds... weird. ]

I don't know what they have to gain, maybe they want us to try and do hero things because they're desperate.. but they haven't forced any of it. For all I know, they're just making it easier for us to settle in after being ripped from our homes.

[ripping from their homes sounds a little harsh and dramatic, but that's what he's come to see it as since the porter plopped him in this world in the middle of something important he was doing.]

Hm. [ a pause ] I wonder if... they are afraid of us. [ give them things so they won't turn back against the government ]

[that definitely was not something he had ever thought about, but it certainly would make sense were that the case.]

I... that would make sense, but why would they give us the nanites for powers if they were afraid of us? Unless... [his voice trails off without him realising it and the rest of what he would say is too quiet to pick up]

Eh? N-no, of course not. I'm very thankful for all the help they have been giving us...! [ specially about the food! ]

But. Uhm... the whole registration thing just makes me wonder "what else"?

Nah, I understand. I feel kinda the same way about it, honestly.

[His expression softens, and he rests his chin on one hand.]

I haven't always been the most upstanding of citizens. I think if I don't register it'll send up some red flags I'd rather avoid.

[If they don't have eyes on him because he's registered, they'd have eyes on him because he wasn't - and those might be more diligent. In this case it's better to blend in, or at least try.]

[ that's true, isn't it? For both of them. Saying no to Registration while they are "Ghouls" would probably raise some worry and red flags, wouldn't it? It'd be like saying "I'm not that willing to play nice". ]

I am going to register, I don't think I can be here without being so.

I just hope later on, there won't be an unpleasant surprise. [ because unpleasant surprises are always happening to Kaneki ]

I think we should be expecting unpleasant surprises no matter which choice we make.

[Given who and what they are, and given what they've already seen of this place so far. Sometimes it's just best to assume the worst, as much as he'd like Kaneki to be able to fit in.]

That's a good question. There are definitely incentives for Registering, but as far as I know, anything that they might not be telling us about it is speculative at best. It wouldn't be too paranoid or anything to keep an ear out for anything suspicious, though.

I've just been wondering why they'd give us all of that and just ask for the tattoo on our wrist to say "Registered". I'm worried I'm signing up to something that I don't fully understand.

I know the feeling. I decided to register probably sooner than I should have. It's good you're looking more into it, though I'm not sure we can provide much on the nanites beyond what has been given to us.

I think it's only normal most would register when we first arrive. It's a big help. And I think I will end up doing that, too.

Do you know if we can ever un-register? Or is Registration a life-time thing?

No, I don't think you can un-Register. As our residency here is a little unpredictable, I think the government doesn't consider that an issue.

If they track us with the nanites, then I don't see why even give us the option not to register.

It's the illusion of choice. They want us to feel like we have control over what happens here.

Ah, I guess that would avoid some issues, I imagine the government doesn't want super powered people angry at them.

But then, should we worry about their control over us?

We probably should.  There are a lot of things to worry about here. 

As long as you don't worry about it all too much.  You gotta find ways to live with it, you know?
