The last time I woke up in a strange place was right after I died.
[ She chuckles, though the sound is tinged with the faintest hint of nervous energy. There's no image to go along with the voice, but the voice is thoroughly female, English and cheerful, if a little ... sarcastic. Whether she's joking or telling the truth is anyone's guess. She sure sounds like she might be joking... ]
So I've spoken to the um, locals and them here a bit, but a second opinion never hurt anyone; This isn't some big Hallowe'en joke, is it? It's not even the right time of year for it. Like everyone here is alive and well and we've all got super powers. I mean yeah I heard the big speech, but how is any of this actually real? We're not all in some weird ... afterlife or anything, are we?
-- I s'pose I should just out and ask, anyway. Anyone know a George Sands? Nina Pickering? George is a tall bloke, bit big in the ears. Nina's a little thing- seriously, she's-- [ uh ] --blonde. And a nurse. They both are, actually. Or they were. And ... Mitchell. It's a last name, but it's what he goes by. Broody, dark hair, probably hasn't bathed in a while- he gets busy. If anyone's seen or knows them, I'd love to hear about it.
... Well, that's it. Thanks! [ click. this is a phone type call, isn't it? Yeah. ]

Orrrr something. But I don't know- You forget what happened to bring you hear and suddenly you are here and it's all weird and full of hover-cars and fancy things like that. It just seems like a weird sort of afterlife.

[That's not much of a save, and he sounds skeptical on the other end of the line.]
You sure? Cause it kinda sounds like you were saying you were dead. Who else in their right mind would ask a question like that?

Rei gives himself a moment to absorb that so he doesn't just blurt rude questions into the communicator, before he answers.]
I don't remember dying, so I don't think it's that, but... you died, and remember it?
Oh, and I'm sorry, but I haven't met anyone by those names.
voice;
I wouldn't say I remember how I got here, no... [ /Thoughtful. ]
Oh. Well that's alright. I'm sure they're around here somewhere. Probably.
voice;
They might not be. None of my friends were here when I arrived, even the one I'd been with before they brought me. [He's sorry to tell her this, but it's the truth.]

[The deadpan to Kite's voice could be mistaken as joking, too, but he's serious. He was in the middle of a life-or-death fight. This being the afterlife is the thing that makes the most sense, honestly.]
It certainly feels real, at any rate, and you're not the only one confused.
voice;
Exactly. [ Also quite nonchalant about death, but hey. ] It seems like it could be ... you know. Afterlife-ish. But also sort of ... not. I mean it can't really be just a place that pulls people from all sorts of 'worlds'. That sounds like some sort of science fiction thing.
voice;
I've been looking around myself, but the most information I got was from the welcoming committee.

Live over a hundred years and there shouldn't be anything that renders you speechless--but Mitchell stares down at his device, and the only word for what he is, is: speechless. He'd know that voice anywhere, even if she didn't rattle off all of their names at the end--Christ, why, Annie, and it's a little exasperated but also fond and a little panicked all at once--it should not be a surprise that she's here, anyone can be dragged here--but it shouldn't have been her. She doesn't deserve this.
He fumbles, then, to answer, and there's a thousand things he could say, a hundred thousand questions to ask her, but eventually all he comes up with is a clueless sort of:]
Annie?
[Give him a second, he'll get there.]
voice;
It might be a little cruel to say she doesn't deserve this. A second chance at life, however skewed it is. Maybe one day she'll come to the realization that if she ever goes home, she'll be dead again, but for now? ]
Mitchell? Is that-- That's you, isn't it?
[ She knows it is, but she has to be sure. This place is weird and she's been told a number of times that her friends aren't even here; and yet. ]

I actually wondered the same thing when I first got here, if it was some sort of strange afterlife. At this point I'm pretty sure it's not. Which, I guess, may or may not be a comfort.
no subject
Oh. Really? I mean- not that I'm not glad this isn't the afterlife; I mean apart from being Florida, it's a bit ... not wonderful?

[And what she knows of others, they aren't ever this weird or complicated. She's fairly sure that the whole "alternate universe" thing is true, as weird as it is to her.]
Seems like you found Mitchell, yeah?
[Since Kara recognized the name.]

Yes! I did, yeah. You know him?

Actually, it very nearly is the right time of year. October starts tomorrow, and I'm sure you know how strictly that schedule isn't followed. It'll be Halloween until the first week of November's done, I'm sure.
voice.
[ Oh man, it's October. Halloween is soon. ... Would it be cliche to go as a ghost? ]
Yeah, and then bright and early November first, you'll hear nothing but sleigh bells.
voice.
