Hi! I’m Gon! [Nudges Killua. Introduce yourself. Killua makes an exasperated face before raising one hand out of a pocket for a slow wave.] Yo. I’m Killua. [Gon frowns at him.] What? That’s so lame. Are you trying to be cool? [At that, Killua bristles, jabbing a finger accusingly at Gon.] How is it lame?! It’s the same way you introduced yourself! [Gon snorts then turns to the camera like a robot and raises a hand, mimicking Killua in a bad robot voice.] “Hi, I’m Killua”.

[For that, Gon gets a heavy punch to the top of his head.] Stop being stupid, idiot! Yeah, I’m the idiot so stop being dumb! That doesn’t make any sense! [For a long few seconds, he stares at Gon in frustration, but eventually his shoulders sag and he sighs, looking to the camera. He gives up.]

Anyway, we’re in need of some help. [Gon nods gravely next to him.] There’s something very important that we need to get a hold of. [Gon nods again before cutting in.] It costs a lot though and we don’t have that kind of money right now.

Normally we wouldn’t bother asking for money like this, but this is something we need as soon as possible. We were hoping some of you could help us. We’re both really fast and strong and Killua’s short [they're the same height] so he could probably fit in small places. Who’s short?! We were hoping someone would have some extra jobs for us. We have our own but… They don’t pay much money, and it’d take way too long. So if you need someone to mow your lawn, wash your dishes, or catch really big fish, let us know!

[There’s a pause and then they both look at each other with a satisfied (and honestly kind of proud) nod before smiling back at the comm with their biggest smiles. In unison:]

Thank you for helping us get a hoverboard!

[Jean lost his point the moment they were trying to genuinely do jobs.]

[wow he wants to address the fact that the social skills here suck but that's probably offensive so hm...]

Does it bug you? That people get hung up on your home being bad?

[He might as well answer sincerely.]

Not so much as the part where I might as well have a prepared answer about why I'm a soldier.

Oh, yeah. I can get that. A lot of people ask me stuff about my dad, too. Or why I wanted to be a Hunter. I don't think it's the same as being a soldier but people still ask about it a lot.

[A beat; he grins mischievously at the phone.] Maybe you should make flashcards. Then you could hand them out when anyone asks.

My friend Armin made a list of questions and answers, but I don't feel like giving out that much information, either. [Besides, it made him sound like he should be shaking in his boots all the time, or not coping. Like hell is Jean going to admit that there could be any truth to that.]

You said hunter like it means something else.

[That's fair. No fun, but fair. This guy really is a stick in the mud. But fine, he'll let it go for now.]

It probably is. Hunters belong to a special organization that gives them special privileges. They give us cards that make it easy for us to get into places that are usually off-limits. We can get top-secret information, too. Or money. Or-[He pauses. Frowns.]-we're allowed to kill people, too, I think. Without consequences.

Anyone can be a hunter so long as they have something they want to hunt. You have to pass the test first. It's pretty hard, I guess. I don't know. I had friends with me so it didn't seem that bad. Some people die during it, though. And a lot leave.

[Killing people. He visibly tenses up at that.]

How much killing is involved, if you're allowed to just do something like that?

I don't think you're supposed to kill a lot, but some Hunters do anyway. [He shrugs.] It depends on the person.

[There's a pant of breath.]

You don't think ... so where do you stand on all that?

I don't really think you should kill anyone but I know sometimes that's not possible. That's why others do it. They think they don't have any choice.

... Sometimes there is no choice. [It's said with a little hesitation. Jean's still dealing with the ramifications of confronting death, of having the end of a gun pointed in his face. Of course, he knows he wouldn't still be alive if things were different. There's no saying that if Armin had waited, he would still have his life.

He swallows.]

The important part is seeing the choice. [It's a heavy turn, and he feels slightly embarrassed by it.

He clears his throat.]

Either way, that's not really a question here. Nothing like that—[hunting and killing people, with the exception of "games" that kids are kidnapped into]—exists in this world, anyway, so it doesn't matter either way.

[For the stretch of the small lecture, Gon keeps silent. His words are important, if obvious but he can still find small comfort in the fact that their views are the same. That despite the rough exterior, the guy has a good heart. That's all that matters.

It makes him wish he could apologize for the life he seemed to have but it had already been made clear that sympathy had no home here. He takes a different approach.]

That's a good thing, right? Now you can do all the stuff you couldn't back home. I don't really know what you went through, but there should be a lot you want to do here, right?

I meant for you! There's nothing like that system here ... but there's nothing like what I know, either, you're right.

I can't really see it as doing stuff I couldn't do. More than ninety percent of what's here isn't anything like what I know. [It doesn't come out as a complaint. It's a statement of fact.]

[He's confused as to why Jean thinks he needs to be reassured so much; he skips the subject.]

I can see what you're saying but there's always stuff we don't know. Until recently, I didn't really know anything about the world either, but I learned a lot from traveling around. You shouldn't give up just because it's unfamiliar. It should be exciting.

I didn't say anything about giving up. [Is that irritably stated? Just a tad.]

But it doesn't mean I'm gonna end up doing any of the same stuff I might have before. Though someone I know has tried to drag me into stuff. [And he's learning swimming. Baby steps. Should he say that? Sure:] And I've taken up swimming here. See, I don't give up so easily. [A hint of unwarranted arrogance sneaks into his tone at the end there.]
