I was wondering the same, so I looked it up. There are lots of different stories for how it started, it looks like, but everyone seems to agree that it's originally a harvest festival.
Seems like it. But I guess that back when the colonists were first coming to this country, they were awfully close to starving, and so this was a celebration of a big harvest that kept them from dying. So it's also all about their country, since it wouldn't really have existed if the first settlers hadn't found this food.
I'm not really sure myself. People here sure have a ton of different holidays. Something about a big fat poultry thing? And cranberry sauce. That's what I've figured out so far.

Mmm, I've heard about the bird and the cranberries, and dressing? Dressing up?

[Yeah, he went there.]
Oh yes, and food. That's my understanding of it.

The people doing the celebrating normally don't see it that way. However... I'm not American.

It's supposed to be about 'giving thanks' and all that, but as far as I can figure it's always been about food. Really.
